A thought-provoking analysis of the common economic traits amongst nobel laureates. This is why it's so important to perform science outreach efforts to provide educational opportunities for those without wealthy and well-educated families.
What kind of childhood makes a top scientist? Is it enough to have all the right traits (brilliance, grit, etc) or do you need the right family too?

And why should we care? A 🧵 on our paper on the Nobel Laureates.

A teaser: the income distribution of the laureates' fathers.1/N

It's a bit unfortunate that I was the last Hero of Physics, but at least it makes it easy for me to reminisce. #scicomm good times

Soooooo in the last week, we came back from Namibia, I gave talks about the Astronomoms and Neurodivergent academics, we went to the gala dinner and cultural evening, we moved hotel to the cape peninsula, went to the beach, and flew to Bloemfontein...

After that, I was invited to give a lesson for 14-18 year olds at a school for autistic children by someone who saw my talk about supporting ND academics at @astronomy2024
Separate Sp Ed has its pros and cons, but I loved connecting with the students and want to do it more often

Finally, again thanks to @LivingMaths , I managed to visit one last school in Bloemfontein where I taught all of the students from grades 3-7 and brought my total number of students this summer up to 1150!

Woke up this morning to the notification that the new Amari book is available! I immediately woke up my daughter, and we have been listening to the audiobook all morning. We've had to stop for an emotion breather already, but we're still hoping for Dylan's redemption @bb_alston !

Hi all, as of Friday, I have reached nearly 1000 students! I am in Bloemfontein now and have 4 more days to cross 1000. I am unfortunately also on my last €30 and would really appreciate if you could share my gofundme to get me through the end of the trip! #SciComm #astro4all
Hi all, I really appreciate everyone who has donated so far!
I've now taught around 900 students in South Africa and Namibia (+ their teachers)
I am running out of money though, so please consider donating and share my gofundme far and wide! gofundme.com/f/african-astr…

I thought it was super clever getting the 7am flight back to Cape Town so I would be able to get to the conference again for the first session... except I got like 4 hours of sleep and the kids got maybe 6 hours of sleep and so we were all very executive function impaired...

and I forgot my phone in the seat pocket of the plane. After asking 4 people who could helped, I ended up at the airline check-in desk. The woman there was my absolute hero. In the end, my phone was exactly where I left it, and we were 2 hours late leaving the airport 😅
