Behind the Balance: Camden Gonzales ’28 — Keydet Men's Cross Country 🏃‍♂️

After losing the love of running last year, it was unclear what path Camden Gonzales '28 would take moving forward. Instead of giving up, he pursued a position in cadre and was selected as captain of the m.

He credits the commitment and responsibility that VMI has instilled in him for his growth and success — and is confident these values will continue to impact and help him during his time at the Institute and beyond.

📖 What Lies Beneath | Nichols Engineering

Every building on post has a story. Welcome to What Lies Beneath, a series exploring the history behind the places that define life at VMI.

🏛️ The Building
Completed in 1931, Nichols Engineering has been a center for engineering arly a century. Built into the hillside overlooking the Parade Ground, the Gothic-inspired structure features distinctive architectural details that complement VMI's historic post.

📜 The Story
During the early 1930s, VMI underwent a period of significant expansion and modernization. Nichols Engineering was among the major construction projects that helped shape the Institute's academic facilities. Its construction reflected VMI's growing emphasis on engineering education and the development of its academic programs.

👀 Did You Know?
Nichols Engineering is taller than it looks! Although only three stories are visible from the Parade Ground, the original building is actually five stories tall, with two levels extending down the hillside.

Samantha Layton '28 wanted to be more than a number while attending college. The small class sizes and the camaraderie at VMI provided the experience she was seeking.

“Honestly, it’s the people and the aid. “It's a hard school to be in, but you bond closer with the people at this school.”
