Severe weather has affected communities across the Navajo Nation, with impacts reported in Chinle, Birdsprings and Rock Point, Arizona; Sheep Springs and Shiprock, New Mexico; and Bluff, Utah.
Following the first round of weather impacts, the Navajo Nation Emergency Operations September 17. After additional weather systems affected the region, the Navajo Nation Risk Coordinator requested support from our Southwest Geographic Area. In coordination with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Emergency Management, an Ad Hoc Type 3 Incident Management Team was mobilized. The team inbriefed with the Navajo Nation EOC on November 3.
The team is integrating with EOC staff to provide incident management support, technical assistance and training to strengthen emergency response capabilities.
The same weather systems also affected the White Mountain Apache Tribe and Hopi, both within the Southwest's Little Colorado River Unit. Similar support efforts are underway with the White Mountain Apache Tribe.
This response demonstrates how our wildland fire personnel apply their incident management expertise in partnership with Native communities during emergencies beyond wildfire.

Alongside our partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, we completed a 130-acre prescribed burn in cattail ponds to reduce density and improve nesting habitat for the federally endangered Yuma Ridgeway Rail and other uding snow geese, sandhill cranes and herons.
Prescribed burning in areas like this also reduces vegetation density to allow easier access for hunters during the waterfowl hunt season. This is a great example of where we are unifying efforts for conservation and building resilient ecosystems.
