Guys! I have a question. Indulge me, please; I need answers.

Those of you who chose yourselves and put yourselves first; never helped any siblings, never dropped out of school so younger ones could go; what does it feel like?

Any regrets?

We’ve heard stories of first children taking on responsibilities early, doing everything for everyone except themselves.

I want to hear from those who never did any of these things!

JPMorgan, America’s biggest bank, is setting up its first merchant bank in Africa, and it’s putting Nigerians in charge.

The managing director is Dapo Olagunju. He has led JPMorgan’s West Africa business since 2018, and before that he spent about 11 years as Group Treasurer at Access Bank.

Four other Nigerians are on the proposed board:
→ Chi Izunwanne, a JPMorgan managing director in London who heads its global macro electronic trading
→ Sarah Alade, former CBN Deputy Governor, who was acting governor in 2014
→ Konyin Ajayi, a lawyer who advised on Airtel Africa’s dual listing
→ Seni Adetu, former CEO of Guinness Nigeria and East African Breweries

The CBN has given approval-in-principle. The final licence is still to come.

When the biggest bank in the world comes to Africa, it doesn’t import its leadership. It hires Nigerians who have already proven themselves at home and abroad.

Nigerian talent is a global export.

Something that feels so obvious & repetitive to you, could mean a lot to other people.

1. Sovereign Trust Insurance: Thin recent profits and sharp YTD drop amid insurance sector capital and margin pressures.

2. International Breweries: Still down hard YTD despite a profit rebound, as weak demand and costs weigh on the sector.

3. R.T. Briscoe: Negative equity and high debt history despite a recent return to profit.
Some cheap stocks on the NGX deserve to be cheap.

Which stock comes to mind?

IT'S SALARY WEEK: 6 INVESTMENT MOVES TO MAKE BEFORE YOUR MONEY DISAPPEARS

1. PAY YOURSELF FIRST

Set aside a percentage of your salary for savings and investments immediately after you get paid.

Even if it's just 5% or 10%, consistency matters.

2. BUY ASSETS, NOT JUST LIABILITIES

Every salary week, ask yourself:

"What can I buy today that could generate income or grow in value over time?"

It could be shares, government securities, or a diversified investment fund.

3. INVEST IN THE NIGERIAN STOCK MARKET

You don't need to be a billionaire to start investing in stocks.

Research profitable businesses, understand their financial performance, and consider investing through a properly licensed stockbroker.

Remember: stock prices can fall, and dividends are never guaranteed.

4. BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND FIRST

Before investing aggressively, build a fund for unexpected expenses.

This can help prevent you from selling investments at a loss when emergencies arise.

5. BEWARE OF INVESTMENT SCAMS

Salary week is also when fraudulent investment schemes become tempting.

Be careful with anyone promising guaranteed daily profits, doubling your money in days, or unusually high returns without risk.

6. LET COMPOUNDING WORK FOR YOU

Investing small amounts consistently over many years can make a meaningful difference.

The secret is patience, consistency, and allowing returns to accumulate.

Returns are not guaranteed, and inflation, fees, and market losses can affect your results.

In 2024, Otedola was reported to be buying Dangote Cement at around ₦350 a share. On Friday, the stock closed at ₦1,111, more than 3 times that price.

Now the talk is that he’s buying more.

If that’s true, think about what it means. A billionaire who bought at ₦350 is willing to buy again at over ₦1,000.

Very few Dangote Cement shares are in public hands, because Dangote’s company owns over 86% of it. In a stock like that, a big buyer can move the price quickly. That’s partly why it can jump 10% in one day, the way it did on Friday.

The lesson for ordinary investors isn’t to chase the stock because Otedola might be buying. It’s that the richest investors don’t buy and sell every week. They find a business they believe in and keep adding to it over the years.

Nigeria desperately needs more founder development programmes like Superteam Nigeria.

Just like Andela, but with communities built around discovering, training, and creating opportunities for early-stage African builders.

This will be far more impactful in the long term.

Pay yourself first.

Before spending on enjoyment, set aside something for savings or investments, even if it is a small amount.

On Friday, Dangote Cement went up 10% in a single day to ₦1,111.

On the NGX, 10% is the maximum a stock can rise in one day.

Africa’s biggest cement company hit the ceiling just three days before the Dangote Refinery IPO closes.

The market is paying close attention to anything with Dangote’s name on it.
