Addendum: Trading companies thrive on volatility and the Chicago and Group 3 spot markets in the US have by far been the most volatile arenas for trading this year.
Trafigura will be the exclusive supplier of crude and feedstocks for the 2 refineries CVR is buying from Marathon (St. Paul Park & Mandan). Combined investment will top $1-billion and Trafigura will get many of the products. Expect Trafigura to increase its trading footprint in the region.

Ukraine continues to slam Russian refineries. Drones hit a fourth refinery in five days in Yaroslavl, knocking out a 300,000 b/d refinery operated by Slavneft-YANOS.

This CVR purchase of two Marathon refineries suggests that the approved CITGO sale (pending) was valued at about one-third of what they could get for the assets in the current environment.

Interesting day for jet fuel prices. They dropped by 18cts/gal in NY and 20cts/gal at the Gulf Coast but fell 41-45cts/gal in CA, the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest. I don't suspect we'll see any fare drops shortly.

One day does not make for a trend. But thanks to spot price drops of 24-29cts/gal today you may see the occasional sub-$3/gallon gas prices in AL, AR, GA, LA, MO, MS, NC, OH, TX, TN and SC tomorrow. GA & NC still in tax holidays.

US refiner earnings were stellar but here’s how quickly things change: Spot price of Gulf Coast blendstock today is $2.76/gal or $115.92/bbl. Cost of complying with renewable fuel rules is $12.03/bbl. Typical processing cost ~$5/bbl. With WTI at $96.10 the profit is a measly $2.79/bbl/

Baseball season is over but November often delivers a "Big Inning" for gasoline retailers. They see gross margins this morning of 41cts/gal but spot gasoline prices are down this morning by 20-26cts/gal nationwide. Good news for $CASY; $MUSA; and $GLP among others.

Five to seven percent drops for crude oil, diesel and RBOB appear stunning until you look at European natural gas prices. Values for the Dutch Title Transfer facility have dropped nearly nine percent this morning on hopes of Russian gas flows resuming.

Tough morning for Goldman Sachs' commodities desk: They just raised Dec. 26 Brent target by $15/bbl to $105/bbl and assess risk premium of $27/bbl with 2027 target of $88/bbl. But Monday markets are behaving as though US & Israel will give peace a chance with $6-$8/bbl losses.

Ukraine successfully hit over 600,000 b/d of Russian refining in attacks on 3 separate complexes between Friday and Sunday morning. Last night was quiet but the point has been made.

Very active Fri-Sun period for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries. Waiting on damage assessments but hits were registered for Novokuibyshevsk 165k refinery; a huge complex with over 400,000 b/d capacity in Ufa; and he 300,000 kb/d Nizhny Novgorod complex.

After a three week lull, Ukraine has hit two large Russian refineries in the last 48 hours. Drones heavily damaged the 165,000 b/d Novokuibshevsk refinery Thursday night, and last night saw drones knock out a catalytic reformer at the huge 470,000 b/d refinery at Ufa.

Some more data on 2026 demand destruction. EIA August distillate demand was 3.705-million b/d, down 30k year-on-year but up 48k from what weeklies implied. Excepting COVID year of 2020, slimmest August demand since 2013.

EIA published final August 2026 gasoline demand number of 8.98-million b/d. It's 110,000 b/d above what the weeklies implied but it is down 260,000 b/d from August 2025. For perspective, August 2019 demanad was 9.834-million b/d.

Some pretty compelling and apocalyptic video footage of Ukrainian drone inspired fire at Russian refinery in Novokuibyshevsk. Can anyone design a limerick based on that location?

Let's put Valero purchase of LyondellBasell refinery in perspective. They are paying $320.5-million. That essentially matches the cost for the two refinery turnarounds staged by Irving Oil in 2023 and 2026. Quite a bargain price.

Capacity is actually 264,000 b/d and they may eventually get back to that number. But restarting one crude train probably gets them to the 165k mentioned.
Woah: LyondellBasell has sold its shut-down refinery in Houston to Valero... could Valero get this refinery back online in the next 6-12 months? capacity is ~165,000bpd and its in a pretty good location.
