"You learn things by building things." That's how Rod Bateman, Chief HTS Engineer, sums up our Demo4 high temperature #superconducting (HTS) #fusion #magnet system.
And what a project it's been.
15,000 components. 10,000 hours of system operation. A peak magnetic field of 13.7 first HTS fusion magnet system to achieve magnetic fields relevant to future fusion power plants.
Demo4 was never designed to hold a plasma, but by designing, building and testing a complete fusion magnet system, we've gained the understanding needed to scale up to energy producing fusion devices. And along the way we've established a leading HTS test facility.
As Greg Brittles, Head of Magnets R&D, puts it:
"The fact we were able to predict the performance of Demo4, and then see it perform exactly as expected, has put a huge tick in the box for HTS technology readiness."
It's a big step forwards for a technology that will be fundamental to #fusionenergy, generating the powerful #magnetic fields needed to confine and control plasma.
With testing now complete, we're already putting this learning into practice through our role as Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's @STEPtoFusion programme and our work in the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium alongside @typeoneenergy @AECOM.
In this video, the TE Magnetics team behind Demo4 share what it took to deliver, what we learned along the way, and why it matters.

13.7 Tesla. Around 10,000 hours of operation. One complete fusion magnet system.
After a 14-month campaign, our world-leading Demo4 high temperature #superconducting (HTS) magnet system has successfully completed testing.
Developed and operated by our TE Magnetics team, Demo4 brought together 44 #HTS coils in a fusion-relevant spherical tokamak configuration with integrated power, cryogenic, control and protection systems.
During the campaign, it:
✅ Completed ~10,000 hours of system operation in various states of energisation, including extended periods at high field
✅ Reached a peak magnetic field of 13.7 Tesla
✅ Ran toroidal field (TF) coils at 5,600 A
✅ Tested performance from 77 Kelvin down to 17 K
✅ Operated under 150 MPa transverse compressive pressure
✅ Completed multiple forced discharges at up to 12.5 T and high current
✅ Proved the reliability of more than 90 HTS joints
But the campaign was about more than reaching headline numbers. It validated our models and gave us extensive data and experience in HTS system performance and operation.
That learning is already informing our next generation of HTS systems for #fusion and beyond, including our work as Magnet Systems Partner on the UK Government's @STEPtoFusion programme.
The results are being presented this week at the Applied Superconductivity Conference #ASC in Pittsburgh by Principal HTS Engineer Bas van Nugteren.
"Demo4 is a major technical and commercial milestone. It proves we can design, build and operate complete HTS magnet systems, and underpins our ambition to become the go-to HTS magnet provider for the fusion industry – building on our role as STEP’s Magnet Systems Partner and our place in the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium. The system endurance testing results provide excellent data to show the robustness of our HTS designs, which is relevant across all industrial applications for magnets and power systems.”
Warrick Matthews, CEO, Tokamak Energy
“HTS magnet design is key to the performance and affordability of a fusion power plant. Demo4 proves our integrated magnet system can perform under demanding fusion-relevant configurations and we’re already putting this learning to work with UK Fusion Energy on the national STEP programme.”
Liam Brennan, Director of TE Magnetics
A huge achievement by everyone involved in designing, building and operating Demo4 throughout the campaign 👏

What does Tokamak Energy look like in 2026?
In the pursuit of #fusionenergy, we’ve developed technologies that are set to transform multiple industries.
From the beginning, we took a two-track approach:
➡️ Advancing fusion science with our ST40 tokamak
➡️ Building erature #superconducting (HTS) capabilities, from design through to manufacturing
In this video, our CEO Warrick Matthews shares how that strategy is delivering results.
Today, we've grown into an end-to-end HTS technology company, working with partners to:
➡️ Design, test and build fusion magnet systems
➡️ Develop HTS magnet systems for applications from life sciences to propulsion
➡️ Enable ultra-efficient power distribution for next-generation data centres
At the same time, ST40 has become more than an experimental device. It’s now a customer testbed supporting #fusion technology development through public-private partnerships with the UK and US governments.
Our 2025 acquisition of Ridgway Machines is helping us scale HTS manufacturing.
👉 Take a look at where we’re heading next.

Here we go…
This is the moment our ST40 centre column is lifted out. A bit like open-heart surgery on a tokamak.
It’s a delicate operation, and a huge milestone for ST40. The centre column has had a tough life, acting as the core of the toroidal magnetic field coil in the pherical tokamak.
After more than 5,000 plasma pulses, it has helped generate magnetic fields above 2 Tesla at the plasma core, confining plasma at temperatures of more than 100 million °C, the threshold for #fusion.
Next up, we install the new and improved centre column built by our partners at The Rockwood Group. This is all part of ST40’s major upgrade programme with @ENERGY and @energygovuk, helping transform it into one of the most reactor-relevant fusion devices in the world.
What began as an experimental tokamak is becoming something much bigger: a customer testbed for the technologies and expertise needed to put #fusionenergy onto the grid⚡
And for anyone wondering what the centre column actually does…
👇
It forms the inner limb of each turn of the toroidal field coil. Its 24 wedges each carry up to 200 kA of current, generating the powerful magnetic fields needed to confine the plasma. Wrapped around the wedges, a 192-turn central solenoid helps drive and sustain the plasma current, after merging-compression start-up.
An impressive piece of equipment with an equally impressive track record!

The wanderer returns!
After a few months on display at @PhysicsNews in London, our ST25 tokamak is safely back home at our Oxfordshire HQ.
While away, it had quite the social calendar, including starring at the 'Physics Powering the Green Economy' reception attended by HRH The fielding endless questions from visiting school groups:
“Is it a spaceship?”
“A robot?”
Good guesses… but not quite.
ST25 was actually our first tokamak, which in 2015 made history by using high temperature #superconducting (HTS) magnets to sustain a plasma pulse for over 24 hours, proving the potential of #HTS for #fusion.
We knew the technology needed more development, so ST25 became the starting point for a bigger journey. We built our record-breaking ST40 tokamak with copper magnets to advance fusion physics, whilst simultaneously developing powerful, compact and robust HTS technology for commercial deployment.
Today, our HTS technology is being developed for multiple industries, including fusion, where we were recently announced as Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government’s @STEPtoFusion programme.
Not a bad legacy for our first tokamak. Welcome home ST25!

What does it take to build a #superconducting fusion magnet system?
It's not just about hitting record magnetic fields. It's about understanding how the whole system behaves under real-world conditions. That is exactly what Demo4, our high temperature superconducting (HTS) s designed to do.
In our latest tests, we have been simulating neutron heating by deliberately warming sections of the centre column.
Why? Because in a working fusion plant, neutrons will create heating. We need to understand how the system responds when that happens.
The blue bands on the central column in the main image are the heaters. And with around 600 sensors measuring temperature, strain, voltage and magnetic field, we can capture data in real time, 1,000 times per second.
But just as important is what we've learned by designing, building and operating Demo4.
We're using that knowledge to guide the next generation of magnets for customer systems, including as Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government’s @STEPtoFusion programme, and with the recently announced UK Infinity Fusion Consortium alongside @typeoneenergy and @AECOM.
We are also taking what we’ve learned into markets beyond fusion, including life sciences and magnetic propulsion.
Today, we're busy turning more than a decade of HTS R&D into real-world engineering.

The high‑temperature #superconducting (HTS) technology that enables #fusionenergy could also transform how power is used within energy‑intensive AI #datacentres. A new study by Tokamak Energy and The BE Company (+BE) shows how HTS power distribution systems can unlock more sts and reduce environmental impact.
📍 We’re presenting results with +BE today at OCP EMEA in Barcelona.
The study shows that #HTS power distribution systems can achieve 3.5× higher power density than conventional copper systems.
For a 10 MW data centre, this translates into:
➡️ ~99% power distribution efficiency (up from 90%)
➡️ Up to 90% fewer power losses
➡️ Up to 9% more usable IT capacity, without increasing grid supply
➡️ Up to 50% lower total cost of ownership over a 15‑year operating life
There are clear sustainability gains too:
➡️ Up to 90% lower CO₂ emissions
➡️ Millions of litres of water saved thanks to reduced cooling demand
➡️ Up to 98% less copper, easing reliance on a constrained material
Born from our fusion energy mission, our TE Magnetics division has over 10 years' experience developing world-leading HTS technology.
Liam Brennan, Director of TE Magnetics at Tokamak Energy:
“This study with +BE demonstrates the transformative potential of HTS for power distribution in high‑demand environments such as data centres. This is a critical technology for supporting the UK’s ambitions for energy resilience, digital infrastructure, and economic growth.”
Sath Ganesarajah, CEO of +BE, adds:
“As rack and cluster densities rise, power delivery has become one of the largest opportunities for outsized gains in cost, efficiency and performance. High‑temperature superconductors offer a step‑change in current density, losses and footprint.”

Showcasing #superconductivity in action at @TokamakEnergy, it was fantastic to welcome social media science creator @bigmanny1_ alongside Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, to carry out a #superconducting experiment using liquid nitrogen under d of Magnets R&D, Greg Brittles.
When a high‑temperature #superconductor is cooled with a #magnet positioned above it, it 'locks' the magnetic field in place, allowing the magnet to float stably above it.
This is the same high‑temperature superconducting (HTS) technology that will be fundamental to commercial #fusion as well as opening up exciting opportunities in other sectors, from power distribution to a new generation of compact, highly efficient motors and generators.

It was a pleasure to welcome Lord Vallance, Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, to Tokamak Energy today as part of the launch of the UK’s new #fusion strategy. The UK Government is backing fusion research and commercialisation with over £2.5 billion over the ising fusion as a key technology for energy security and long‑term economic growth.
During the visit, Lord Vallance toured our ST40 spherical tokamak, our world‑leading high temperature #superconducting (HTS) magnet technology, and Demo4 fusion magnet system.
Our CEO, Warrick Matthews, who led the visit, said:
“We welcome the government’s commitment to establishing the UK as a global leader in fusion – the 21st century’s most important technology. Tokamak Energy brings extensive expertise to the race, including power‑plant‑relevant results on our ground-breaking spherical tokamak and our world‑first HTS fusion magnet system."
"Through our TE Magnetics division, we are a market leader in the breakthrough HTS technology the STEP fusion programme will rely on to control the plasma. Our focus is realising its full potential for fusion and other sectors including science, defence, transport and grid technologies – tomorrow’s technology creating growth, jobs, exports and value today.”
The new strategy confirms that the UK will work in close partnership with industry, ensuring the country is positioned to capture near‑term economic benefits from rapidly developing fusion technologies: accelerated innovation, high‑value skills, secure well‑paid jobs, and commercially valuable spin‑out technologies.
