The bottom line: One winner (@RGrynspan) and one loser (@Lana_Nusseibeh). Plus a lagging gridlock.

"Duplication [at the United Nations] wastes money and obscures responsibility. Activities that have outlived their purpose must end. Today, 86% of mandates agreed by the UN General Assembly have no sunset clause. Trust is the scarcest and most valuable asset of diplomacy. The UN discipline and delivery".

But the Mission will be at the heart of the UN General Assembly on November 10 - a meeting triggered under UN Resolution 76/262 (the "Veto Initiative"), which requires the Assembly to hold a debate whenever a permanent Security Council member uses its veto: rfi.fr/fr/afrique/202…

The term of the current Secretary-General, @antonioguterres, ends in December. By convention, all previous secretaries-general did not run for a third term, except, ironically, Kurt Waldheim in 1981, who hid his Nazi affiliation. China vetoed him 16 times — a rare moment in ower was yielded for something good. hindustantimes.com/opinion/end-th…

Since 1945, this is the highest level [of conflicts] we have seen, and it involves not only internal conflicts (as was the case twenty years ago) but also conflicts between states. The #UN has not developed the tools to truly have a seat at the table when these conflicts arise. As a result, it has been sidelined because we have sidelined ourselves from trying, from being there, and from taking risks. — says Rebeca #Grynspan, front-runner to become the next UN Secretary-General.
The UN needs to be back at the table where peace is negotiated. We cannot just wait to be invited.

The Office of the Secretary-General is not structured to respond to the conflicts we face today. I would start by strengthening its capacity to turn the UN’s analysis into political action.

That is why I insist that the Secretary-General must be willing to take the risk of rejection and failure, to try ten times and go for the eleventh.
