@TechEmails Love how Anthropic founders put "safety" in quotes (They have no idea how to define it)

@TechEmails with rl & a few other techniques, my hope is that many of the safety concerns with large language models just won’t be very difficult!

@TechEmails le hard part n'était pas l'email de noam, c'est comment on traduit son expertise en produits qui marchent dans le monde reel.

@TechEmails My favorite quote by @NoamShazeer: when asked why large language models work, he said: "My best guess is divine benevolence. Nobody really understands what’s going on. This is a very experimental science. It’s more like alchemy or whatever chemistry was in the Middle Ages.”

@TechEmails @Jason FYI this 2021 email form Jarred Kaplan (A\ co-founder and CSO) reference the fact that Anthropic was already developing coding capabilities before Cursor was founded.

@TechEmails He did not end up joining Anthropic. He indeed built his own company, which funnily enough was quite quickly acquired by Google for $2.7 billion, where he then lead the development of Gemini for a few years. Recently, in June 2026 he joined OpenAI.

@TechEmails Beautiful. Very respectful, humble and yet ambitious and compelling. For anyone wondering, Noam Shazeer was among the lead authors of the seminal paper Attention Is All You Need that introduced the transformer architecture at the core of the current AI revolution.

@TechEmails how can SF be so small and yet there was no one else at Ant who knew him personally to do the outbound?

@TechEmails Interesting part is the email was sent exactly 1 year before chat gpt launched and the topics they were discussing sound way more current than you would expect.

@TechEmails An email from an Anthropic cofounder to Noam Shazeer in 2021 isn’t surprising early era AI founders all talked to each other because the field was tiny and everyone was cross‑pollinating ideas

@TechEmails Wild to read this in hindsight. Speed, safety and steerability were already the core tension in 2021. Still are.

@TechEmails Telling that Google keeps frustrating its best talent, rather than doing all it can to help them unleash their genius. Big part of the rot.
