Google Reader might be dead, but RSS is alive and well.
Build your own RSS hub with Tailscale. Read what you want, from any browser, without exposing it to the open web.

@Tailscaleogle Reader and was so heartbroken when they retired it.
This post reminded me of a standalone PHP application called Fever that I used to replace it. I hosted it on a PC in my home. Tailscale would have made that much simpler.
I tried several other rss apps but nothing ever felt quite the same as Google Reader.
RIP

@joedevon I seamlessly switched to feedly back then and it has worked seamlessly ever since.

@Tailscale RSS behind the tailnet is a great pattern. The reader stays private, no login page exposed, and the server still fetches feeds from the open web.
Same reason I keep homelab dashboards off forwarded ports. Especially on a day with a PHP RCE in the news.

@Tailscale Love it. And if you’re into AI, after setting up your rss hub, look at this for initial ideas for your feed:
Finding myself going back to RSS/Atom feeds a lot more recently. There's a lot more higher quality longform and a lot less slop intended to provoke. Any product that happens to look a bit different today but that has fundamentally the same incentive structures will eventually converge to the same black hole at the center of gravity well.
We should bring back RSS - it's open, pervasive, hackable.
Download a client, e.g. NetNewsWire (or vibe code one)
Cold start: example of getting off the ground, here is a list of 92 RSS feeds of blogs that were most popular on HN in 2025:

Works great and you will lose a lot fewer brain cells.
I don't know, something has to change.

@Tailscale A self-hosted RSS hub behind Tailscale sounds ideal for keeping feeds private, portable, and completely out of algorithmic timelines.

@Tailscale You think tailscale is already the best thing, then it gets better.
