😮‍💨 one of the biggest challenges not only for coaches, but players to embrace and understand 🤝
Texas head coach Sean Miller talking about a quote Pat Riley told Doc Rivers:

“Don’t ever coach a player for who they are today, you have to coach them for what you know they can become.”

Byron Scott says that Kobe Bryant would lift at 4am, come back and make 500 shots, do a full practice, then work out again at night, and says Kobe told him he did that because over the course of five years the gap would become impossible to close for his competition

“There’s time that I admired on how hard they worked: Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Kobe Bryant. His was legendary. Kobe, as far as he never worked out just once a day. He would get up at 4 in the morning, or he’d say, ‘Meet me at the gym at 4 in the morning,’ and he would work out for two, three hours lifting because he knew he had to get stronger, had to get bigger.”

“Then he would go eat breakfast, and then he’d come back and he’d make 500 shots, so he’d be there another two hours. Then he’d get ready for practice. He’d go through a two-and-a-half-hour, three-hour practice like it’s nothing. Then he’d go have lunch, chill out for another hour, then he’d come back at night and work out again.”

“And it was crazy to me because his method of it was scientific. He was like, ‘B, if I work out three times a day and all these other guys who are so-called great players work out just for practice, they just work out that one time a day, over a five-year period they can’t catch me. I’ve worked out that much. I’ve worked on my body, I’ve worked on my footwork, I’ve worked on my shot, so five, ten years from now they can’t catch me. They’re that far behind.’”

“I never thought about it until he explained it to me. I was a guy that in the summertime, go to the gym, lift weights, go to the track, run for two hours, then go play — and that’s equivalent to three times a day. But I never thought of it or put it in the type of method that he was talking about.”

“I just thought it was ironic that a young man got it that quickly. He understood that if I worked out harder and longer and more than the guy who’s supposed to be on my level, sooner or later he won’t be on my level anymore. Kobe was extremely intelligent. He just said, ‘Scientifically, if I do this, you can’t catch me.’ And he was right. It worked.”

Jalen Brunson says his parents made him choose between basketball and a social life

“My parents told me when I was in high school that I have three things to choose from. I have school, I have basketball, I have my social life to choose from. And I can only pick two of the learly not an option to say no to. So it was really between basketball and my social life. And I chose basketball.”

“Every day came down to getting my schoolwork done, making sure I got my work done with basketball, and then after that I could be a kid. As long as you did the work first, I could do what I want.”

“But that also came, it wasn’t just my decision, also finding the right friends to be around. I had a great group of friends who knew my goals, who knew what I had to do before I could do anything.”

“They never pressured me into skipping a day to go hang out. They made sure I did what I had to do. Those people are still with me today. It was really important for me to understand that my surroundings were just as important as my decisions.”

Kenyon Martin says he took a 20 hour greyhound bus he paid for himself to ABCD basketball camp for a chance to get noticed, and says he played so hard against Kobe Bryant that the camp flew him home first class

“Just play basketball hard. That’s all I did. Dunk shit, fight shit, I knew. The first NBA player I saw, I was in high school, man. Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn came did a thing at my high school. They was playing for the Mavericks. First time. And I'm challenging them”

“Hey, I'll bust y’all ass. Not knowing they in the league, giving Scotty and Mike 50, right? Yeah, but I'm arrogant in that regard, but I'm think I'm but not knowing they really, really good. But that was the first NBA players I saw. I didn't know nothing about rankings and who this that and the third. Man, I went to ABCD camp on the whim, right? Called a Greyhound. 20 hours bro.”

“When I got to ABCD, they in that thing talking about rankings and I’m like, rank who? Where? Who’s this dude? Why everybody following him around? It was Kobe. Like, why everybody following him around? Why he special?”

“Everybody was there. Class of ’96. Kobe was the No. 1 player in the class. You had Romel Lloyd, Shaheen Holloway, Lester Earl, Tim Thomas. I caught a bus, man. I caught a Greyhound. How does taking a Greyhound 20 hours turn into 15 years in the NBA? Just don’t deviate, man. It was never built on skill.”

“Throw the ball up. That used to be my thing. Throw the ball up, dog. I’ma beat you to it. Throw it up, I’ma go get it. It’s on the floor, I’ma go get it. You ain’t going to play harder than me. You’re not.”

“I caught a greyhound. I caught a Greyhound out there. And the thing is So, listen. Caught a greyhound there, right? I played so well that I got a flight home, dog. That's how hard I played at the camp.”

Kobe Bryant once said:

“Everyone wants to be a beast. Everyone wants to be the best. But very few people are willing to do what it actually takes. Because what it takes is boring. It is waking up at 4:00 AM. It is shooting the same shot a thousand times. It is watching the film when you are tired. People fall in love with the result, but they hate the process. You have to fall in love with the boredom. You have to fall in love with the repetition.

If you can find joy in the mundane work that no one else sees, the lights will eventually shine on you.”

Jalen Brunson says 30 intentional minutes can beat 2 hours in the gym, and explains the NBA was never his goal because he was consumed with just trying to get a little bit better everyday

“People say, ‘Oh, I was in the gym for two hours today.’ Like, okay, what did you do in the h more difficult and better workout in 30 to 40 minutes versus just being in the gym BS’ing for two hours.”

“While it was about consistency, it was about being precise. There was intent to everything you did. It was definitely commitment. I loved going out and working out. I loved going and playing pickup.”

“When we lived in Virginia, we lived in Charlottesville Virginia when my dad worked at UVA. I would go play at the rec center with college kids. We would play pickup, I’m playing against older people and I’m playing well. I’m not thinking, I’m going to the NBA. The NBA was never talked about. No. I’m just trying to get better. It was all about going to college.”

“There were baby steps. Yes there were long term goals, but I’m focused on the short term goals. Baby steps, one step at a time. People just want to jump straight there, and they get disappointed because they didn’t enjoy their journey. I enjoyed every step of my journey. Enjoy your steps.”

Urban Meyer believes people should stop claiming they want to reach their dreams when their daily habits say otherwise

“I always like to say, you’re here, and you want to get there. The fastest way is draw that straight line and stay away from anything that pulls you off of that ’s a great quote actually right over there that says, ‘Do your habits reflect your dreams and goals? And if not, then change.’”

“When I had my son, I changed that quote. My son has it up in his bedroom right next to his bed: ‘If your habits don’t reflect your dreams and goals, change your habits, or change your dreams and goals.’ Don’t lie to yourself.”

“I hear people say, ‘I want to go play in the NFL,’ but you’re acting like this. Don’t lie. You lie to me, it’s fine. But don’t lie to yourself.”

“Then you’ve got to look in the mirror and say, ‘Do I really want to be a first-round draft pick and I’m doing this?’ That’s when usually it hits home.”
