Every thermal camera on earth that can see a drone, missile, or a soldier- needs a chip that only six companies in the world can make. One of them is worth $113 million, with a backlog growing 63% y/y.
Vigo Photonics $VGO is the only EU-sovereign, vertically integrated ector manufacturer on the continent. In the context of European defence procurement post-Ukraine and EU semiconductor sovereignty policy, this is not a competitive advantage - it is a policy mandate.

European NATO members cannot source military-grade IR detectors from anyone else without going to US or Israeli ITAR controlled suppliers. This structural position is permanent absent a decade-long competitor build-up. There is no credible alternative on the horizon.
The US$53m PCO framework
This framework contract (2025–2031) is for cooled 640×512 T2SL FPAs to be integrated into PCO S.A. thermal imaging cameras. PCO is the primary optoelectronic supplier to the Polish Armed Forces.
Confirmed platform integration: BWP Borsuk (Polish IFV), Leopard 2PL (Polish Army MBT upgrade), KTO Rosomak (8×8 wheeled APC). These are active Polish Army procurements with NATO Allies purchasing similar platforms. The FPAs replace imported chips, eliminating a critical supply chain vulnerability and meeting EU strategic autonomy objectives.
The market is treating the PLN 192M PCO framework as the entire story when it's just the opening tranche. The full picture is a PLN 500M+ decade long relationship built on the Polish military's platform pipeline - every one of which requires PCO thermal systems powered by Vigo FPAs: 1,400 Borsuk IFVs, 700 CBWP heavy IFVs, 820 K2PL tanks manufactured in Poland, and 233 Leopard 2PL upgrades.
At PLN 2–3M per FPA system and 2–3 systems per platform, the addressable opportunity within Poland alone exceeds PLN 500M over the decade. This is not priced in.
InfraRed Associates acquisition
The IRA deal looks like a small acquisition. It is the cheapest US DoD entry ticket ever written. $8.4M purchased 50 years of OEM relationships with US national labs and prime contractors, a US manufacturing footprint, InSb and dual-colour detector capabilities Vigo didn't have, and an immediately profitable operating business.
As well as several European contractors and governments Vigo / IRA have confirmed orders for several US defence contractors and government agencies.
NASA: Vigo produces MIR infrared detectors for NASA's Curiosity Mars rover, the ESA's Schiaparelli, and the Artemis Programme's Orion spacecraft.
NAMES WITHHELD / CLASSIFIED: Vigo & IRA are likely deeply imbedded with DoD labs (DARPA, NRL, AFRL) as this is IRA's prime OEM customer base. These labs buy commercial-off-the-shelf detectors for R&D - Vigo/IRA products are exactly this.
Because of the nature of these contracts, names are withheld, and details are sparse- we may never know about the true nature of Vigo's business. But I think they are likely to secure deals with $NOC, $BAESY, $LHX and will write about this in a separate post.
Every structural shift in global defence right now maps to Vigo's product suite: NATO rearmament driving platform procurement across Europe, counter-UAS proliferation where IR seekers and EO/IR payloads are the sensing layer, MANPAD DIRCM demand which is the exact application IRA unlocks via Northrop and BAE, EPA methane regulation creating a durable industrial IR sensing market, and Taiwan Strait risk mobilising Asian defence budgets toward exactly this technology.
This is not a cyclical tailwind. It is a structural, decade-long realignment of defence priorities toward the sensors Vigo makes. Vigo compounded revenue at 12% CAGR over the past decade - achieved entirely without these tailwinds. With them, the decade ahead could look materially different.
The market is pricing a niche Polish sensor company. The reality is a one of one European defence infrastructure supplier with no domestic substitute, a growing US footprint, and a sticky platform procurement pipeline that will keep classified agencies and primes reordering for the next ten years.
