We want to share how the Mexican government partnership started, where we are now, and how we’re shaping the future together.
For over a year we have been active in public policy, particularly in the academic sphere. Through a mix of academic and persconnected with universities and government authorities.
In parallel, we were building a legaltech product for intellectual property licensing, but we never reached product-market fit.
So we pivoted.
At first we explored solutions for public registries. Gabo (Chief Legal Officer), together with Paulo (BD Lead), reached out to the municipality of Rosarito in Baja California and started early conversations.
At the same time, Wario (Elote CEO) was already seeking alternatives. He found @colosseum signed up, and connected with @SuperteamTH
There we got roasted again and again.
We had the right tech in @soft_law , but with a wrong use case. We were running out of time for the hackathon, yet we decided to pivot once more, this time with more experience, clearer knowledge, and new friends.
We’re in web3 to empower people. The most direct way to give people real agency is economic.
In Mexico, non-collateral loans often carry extremely high interest rates. If you can’t pay and end up in court, it can put the borrower’s property (and even their family’s) at risk.
That’s why Elote was born: non-collateral loans for the people.
The first batch of loans will be in partnership with the government. Some govs already provide grants for SMEs to promote the economy, we are just helping to expand and tokenize the program.
The goal for the MVP is clear: provide 100 - 150 micro loans to the local population of Rosarito Municipality, we are trying to get a deal where the gov will cover the interest and backstop any non-payment.
We’re still in early talks. We’ve had a couple of meetings so far and are about to hold a “Mesa de Trabajo” to explore the best solution for the population.
What do we mean by non-collateral loans? In short, our legaltech product allows the tokenization of legal contracts, including non-collateral loans (something still underexplored in crypto). But that’s a post for another day.
We’re building everything in public.
