"The work of God in the soul is a lasting and an everlasting work; and if you are once healed by Christ, he has wrought in you an effectual cure, which will hold good throughout time and eternity."

Susie Spurgeon gave Charles a first edition of Richard Sibbes’s Bowels Opened, sermons on the love between Christ and his church in the Song of Solomon.

It’s a small but beautiful glimpse into the affection, theology, and friendship at the heart of their marriage.

"...when the heart gets right, the head seems to get right too, in great measure."

— Charles Spurgeon

"Oh! loyal hearts and virgin souls, by the lilies of your love, and by the roses of his blood with which he bought you, Awake! awake! awake! and ask for an earnestness which you may never lose again."

— Charles Spurgeon

"The true character of God is fitted to awe, impress, and humble the sinner: be careful not to misrepresent your Lord."

— Charles Spurgeon

"To prophesy smooth things, and to extenuate the evil of our lost estate, is not the way to lead men to Jesus."

— Charles Spurgeon

Susie Spurgeon was not impressed with Charles at first.
But after hearing him preach, coming to faith, and joining the church, their relationship began to change. Then Spurgeon handed her a book of poems and asked:

“Have you ever prayed for your future husband?”

"If you fall into certain hyper-Calvinistic views you will have a reply ready to the rebuke of the most earnest of God’s servants. You will begin to judge them instead of judging yourselves, and accuse them of being unorthodox while you believe yourselves to be sound,"

— CHS

"...if you put a number of sleeping people together they are not likely to be very active in rebuking one another, so that this state of mind is very dangerous and very insidious."

— Charles Spurgeon

"If we were more truly sensible of our need of the Spirit of God, should we not study more in dependence upon His teaching?"

— Charles Spurgeon

"We believe that everything stated in the book that comes to us from God is to be accepted by us as His sure testimony, and nothing less than that."

— Charles Spurgeon

As gifted as Charles Spurgeon was, he didn’t carry ministry alone.

He had Susie, elders, deacons, fellow pastors, and faithful people around him—and above all, he knew his dependence on God.

Faithful ministry is not a solo project.

"Great talents you may never have, but you will do well enough without them if you abound in intercession."

— Charles Spurgeon

"[N]othing can so gloriously fit you to preach as descending fresh from the mount of communion with God to speak with men."

— Charles Spurgeon
