The Labour Government promised to tread more lightly on our lives when it came to power in 2024.
That was a lie.
Look at what it has done.

📣🚨 FSU MEMBER TESTIMONIAL
“If it wasn’t for the Free Speech Union, I wouldn’t be here today. I wouldn’t be hearing back about my degree, and I’m doing really well in my final year of studies.”
Brodie Mitchell was suspended from university for seven academic weeks after he said a pro-Palestine activist’s keffiyeh looked like a “tea towel”. She had accused him of being a “wannabe Jew”.
@BrodieMitchell1 was not only barred from campus and unable to continue his studies there, but was also reported to the police.
As Brodie says, when people don’t like your opinions, they may try to silence you by weaponising the authorities against you.
This is the reality for many students, especially those who are politically engaged.
The Free Speech Union supported Brodie throughout his case, and we’re delighted to have helped.
The state of free speech in Britain is dire, particularly on university campuses.
If you’re a student, take advantage of our discounted membership before it ends on 31 October. It’s just £14.99 — 50% off.

Interesting row developing between GB News and Ofcom.
GB News is accusing the media regulator of suppressing its own research showing that the channel's viewers rate it more highly for trustworthiness than BBC viewers rate the BBC.
Ofcom says the omission was due to methodological changes, while delayed publication of the underlying data was an administrative error.
But here's the interesting bit.
The Government is considering proposals to give prominence to supposedly 'trusted' news providers on social media.
If Ofcom is going to help shape that debate, surely transparency and consistency in how it presents its own research are essential.

On Monday, the Free Speech Union went to 10 Downing Street to deliver our petition to save jury trials.
Our research shows that people charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be found not guilty in a Crown Court with a jury than in a magistrates’ court , more people will be locked up if David Lammy’s plans become law.
We know how vital jury trials are in speech cases. Royal Marine veteran Jamie Michael was arrested at work after a staffer for a Labour Member of the Senedd reported his 12-minute Facebook video. In it, he called on people to exercise their democratic right to protest peacefully against mass migration in the wake of the heinous Southport murders.
He was held in custody and denied bail. With the support of the Free Speech Union, he was found not guilty by a jury of his peers in just 17 minutes.
Jury trials are a cornerstone of our criminal justice system and a bulwark against a repressive state and an increasingly militant cancel-culture mob.
Thank you to everyone who signed our petition.

My choir was - quite literally - silenced.
Because I publicly stated that it's not possible to change sex. And that men who 'identify' as women should not have access to women's rights, single sex spaces and sports.
I was the only choir member who had publicly stated these lawful, reasonable and widely held views. But all choir members were 'punished' - on my account.
We were dropped from performing at this year's London Marathon by the disability charity Scope.
Because I said sex was real.
This week Scope have published an apology to myself and my choir - thanks to the support of the @SpeechUnion. I really couldn't have done it without them.
Here's my story ...

“The Free Speech Union has just helped me secure a public apology from disability charity Scope after my choir was dropped from this year’s London Marathon because of my gender-critical views.”
Janet Murray is a journalist and founder of the Singing performs at running events and helps runners raise money for good causes.
For the past two years, the choir had been part of Scope’s “cheer squad” without incident. But a few days before this year’s marathon, Scope dropped the choir after receiving two anonymous complaints about Janet’s public expression of her gender-critical views.
Gender-critical beliefs are protected under the Equality Act 2010. They are lawful and were reaffirmed by last year’s landmark Supreme Court ruling, which confirmed that “sex” refers to biological sex. Janet is clear that these are her personal views; she does not know what the other choir members thought.
Janet tried to resolve the matter privately with Scope before informing her fellow choir members.
After the Free Speech Union intervened, Scope reinstated the choir — but only the night before the marathon. Janet put together a small group at short notice, which performed elsewhere along the route, separately from Scope.
Scope has now apologised and publicly acknowledged that its decision was wrong. But the ordeal caused considerable upset to Janet and the choir, who did not deserve to be treated this way.
Women should be able to speak freely about their sex-based rights without being punished for doing so.
Janet said that when she first joined the Free Speech Union, she never thought she would need us. She’s grateful she did.
We’re delighted we could help @jan_murray.

A 15-year-old schoolboy was arrested by four West Midlands Police officers after a Conservative councillor complained about being mocked online.
Fraser, a 15-year-old Reform UK activist, was woken by police and arrested in front of his neighbours. His mugshot and DNA were taken. Even his shoes were confiscated as he was left in a cell.
What had he done? He had criticised a Conservative councillor on Facebook for wearing shorts and a T-shirt to a council meeting. When the councillor later attended a meeting in a suit, Fraser remarked that he was thankfully not dressed like a “rent boy”.
The story has become a global embarrassment. It has even reached the New York Post, where our American friends have expressed gratitude for the free-speech protections of the First Amendment.
Politicians must not use the police as their personal force to silence criticism or mockery.
Fraser is still, two months on, waiting to hear if he’ll be charged with a crime.
If a 15-year-old can be arrested for a jokey comment online, anyone can.
