Aerial footage from Spain’s Guardia Civil shows the aftermath of this morning’s high-speed train collision near Urda/Los Yébenes (Toledo).
Around 08:54, a Renfe AVE (397 on board) struck the rear of a stationary Iryo service (147 passengers + 1 baby) on the Madrid–Seville ). Several carriages derailed, with at least two falling down the embankment.
Provisional toll: 46+ dead (authorities warn it will rise), 150–180+ injured. Total passengers: \~544.
This is the second major disaster on the Madrid–Andalucia corridor in under a year involving Renfe and Iryo. The January Adamuz (Córdoba) crash also killed 46.
Initial indications point to a failure in the LZB signaling system that forced manual control; investigators are examining possible human error by traffic controllers. Services suspended.

“I was at the back, so we barely felt it — just a really hard blow and then we derailed. Up front is the head of the Renfe that was facing Sevilla… and it’s completely destroyed. The Iryo is on’t know if the Renfe derailed first and the Iryo went past, or if the Iryo came off the rails and then the Renfe slammed into it. Either way, the front of our train is gone. This is also a very serious accident on the Renfe side.”

A survivor from the AVE: “They told us there was a congestion of trains and we stopped for five or ten minutes. We resumed and about ten minutes later we slammed into the Iryo. We felt a sudden hard brake — we saw one of the attendants flying, her arms broke and the cart fell on e. On the other side we saw people buried and unfortunately a man who had died. We helped get the injured out of our carriage, then went over because it looked much worse. We even cut the fences so the firefighters and Guardia Civil could get in better. It’s a disgrace.”
