š NEW JERSEY TEACHERSā CONVENTION
ā¼ļø ONE-DAY SWING MOVEMENT CLINIC.
With schools closed for the NJ Teachersā Convention, Iām opening Thursday, November 5th for a special 3-hour, softball-only Swing Movement Clinic at the Hamilton Aās in Hamilton Township, NJ.
This isnāt about putting every hitter into the same position or chasing quick results. Weāre going to spend three hours teaching movement helping athletes understand how their body creates the swing, how the lower half supports rotation, how posture and shoulder angles adjust to pitch height, and how the body ultimately turns and releases the barrel with speed.
12U & Under: 9:00 AMā12:00 PM
13U & Older: 12:30ā3:30 PM
Limited to 6 players per age bracket
Keeping each group to six allows me to work closely with every athlete while still creating a competitive small group training environment.
Teaching movement, not positions. The body turns the barrel.
To reserve a spot, email acesturnthebarrel@gmail.com.
š I only have 2 available slots open 13U and over. 4 spots open 12U and under.

The account calling itself āJason Bourneā is making accusations about my character. I reject those accusations.
I spent over 20 years serving Trenton, including 13 years working narcotics. My service went beyond making arrests. I left family birthdays to pick people up from ite them with their children. I organized clothing drives for families who needed help. Those people mattered to me, and they still do.
You can disagree with my hitting philosophy. You can criticize something Iāve said. Iām responsible for my words, and I can defend my teaching. But suggesting Iām racist or donāt care about women is a serious accusation.
The athletes and families I work with know the time, care, and commitment I give them. Iāll stand behind that work and my years of service. If you want to challenge me, bring facts.

This young lady is no joke driven to the core. Standing 5ā10ā with long levers, she throws overhand 73 mph and produces exit speeds over 75 mph. An absolute force behind the plate and in the batterās box.
She understands how her body works down and up and how to adjust to ights. Pair that awareness with her strength, quick hands, and commitment to getting better, and pitchers are going to have their hands full. Youād better make quality pitches against her!
A couple of those swings were absolute no-doubters. š£

A newer hitter with an extremely strong lower half. Weāre working on improving how she turns through her mid-back to connect that lower-half strength and throw the barrel with more speed.
Going to be fun to see how far this young lady can go!

Hitting session from 10/22 with @SangilloJohn. Focused on staying 50/50, attacking the low outside pitch, maintaining balance, fully extending through my swing, and improving body rotation. š„

Young lady, I absolutely love this! Seeing your mother out there helping and flipping balls to you is so awesome to watch. That time together means more than you know. Give your mom a big thank-you for being out there with you!
Good luck! Stay hungry, stay focused on the process, and keep putting in the work. Iām so proud of you!

If your kid isnāt old enough to have hair under their armpits or on their legs, I donāt give a shit about their stats.
I care about how they move, what theyāre learning, and whether theyāre building skills that will hold up as the game gets harder.
Stop chasing youth results at the expense of long term development.

How can one SEC staff classify an athlete as āaerialā while another classifies that same athlete as āterrestrialā?
Aerial and terrestrial describe movement preferences not fixed swing identities.
Aerial athletes often appear more elastic and spring-driven. They may use more bounce, stiffness, and vertical projection.
Terrestrial athletes often appear more grounded and pressure driven. They may create force through the ground, use more stability, and move with greater connection to the surface.
But athletes exist on a continuum. They may also adapt based on the task, pitch location, timing, coaching, and what theyāve learned.
So before changing an athleteās swing based on a motor-preference label, ask:
Was the preference consistently identified?
What were the testing criteria?
Was she clearly aerial or terrestrial or near the middle?
Could the movement pattern be learned, limited, or adaptable?
This athlete has learned multiple movement options. She can create pressure into the front side, work through the rear femur, adjust her shin angle, change her shoulder path, and alter contact position based on pitch height and location.
That adaptability may explain why different staffs see her differently.
The label should help us understand the athlete not force her into a new swing model.
Individualized instruction starts with knowing what she naturally prefers, what she has learned, what she can adjust, and what the game demands.

My thoughts on coaches who are verbally and mentally abusive: I see it and hear about it far too often, and it reminds me of things I witnessed during my police career.
Ever see an officer walk into an already hostile situation and immediately start screaming? Adding fire to fire. Sometimes that volume covers up a lack of confidence, preparation, or understanding of what they can legally do. When you donāt know how to communicate, explain your decisions, or articulate your actions, intimidation becomes your fallback.
I see the same thing in coaching. Some coaches rule through fear because they donāt know how to teach. They demand that every athlete fit the same mold, then get angry when a kid doesnāt respond the way they expected.
Every athlete is different. You cannot coach every kid exactly the same way and expect the same understanding or response.
You expect them to recognize every situation but have you taught it? Have you explained it in a way they understand? Have you given them the repetitions to learn it?
Whether itās throwing, defense, or hitting, if an athlete is struggling, can you break it down? Can you help them feel the difference? Can you give them a correction they can actually use?
If your only answer is to get louder, you need to look at your own ability to teach.
I believe in holding athletes accountable. I also believe the adult responsible for teaching them needs to be accountable for how they do it.
Your frustration does not give you permission to humiliate a kid. Know your craft. Learn how to communicate. Earn their trust.
Being feared doesnāt make you a good coach.

I donāt post my baseball hitters much with so many āprofessional opinionsā out there. But this little dude has been with me for two years, learning how to move properly and building confidence along the way.
The same kid who once had no confidence and was buried at the bottom of neup came up big in his championship game with two home runs.
Heās coming into his own, carrying himself with confidence, and proving what hard work can do.
Keep working, little man.

Like we talked about, you canāt control everything. Focus on what you can control your effort, attitude, and preparation. Go out there and compete like a beast. Play hard, be a table setter, and make an impact every time you step on that field. Play strong defense and give your team a chance to win. Keep showing up and doing your part, young lady. The right opportunities will come.
Super proud of our team for competing against a tough schedule this past weekend at Team NJ. Thank you to all the coaches that came to watch us play! Very excited for the rest of the šseason with this stacked teamšŖ

Donāt be a one-legged duck spinning in circles. š¦ The front side is the brake it accepts pressure and helps direct the torso. Learn to control the down before ripping back up. I teach movement, the why behind it, and options to adjust not one way to swing. @p_tenley

@SangilloJohn Great post. The thing about baseball is everyone has some highlights in a weekend. If you go 2-12 you have two "Beast Mode"
highlights. If you go 6-12 one weekend and 1-13 next weekend you (and/or) your parents can create a "Star" IG profile.

Ever notice some of the loudest athlete accounts on social media are actually run by the parents? š
Plenty of Saturday home run highlights. Then Sunday comes, the pitching gets better, and that same hitter gets quiet.
What happens when you travel nationally and the coaching staff sees those vertical-path swings? If they have a very good pitcher on the mound, theyāll start pitching to specific locations once they understand how to attack that stuck path.
Then the social media account goes hush-hush.
A steep, vertical shoulder path might produce big swings against weaker pitching. But when thatās your only option, what happens when the pitcher refuses to give you the ball you match up with?
Whereās the adjustability? Whereās the ability to change planes and cover different locations?
Build a hitter who can compete on Sundaysāand anywhere in the country. Give them more than one movement option.

Audrey was in from Maine for two days this past week, and we worked extremely hard during those five hours. I was tough on her because she needed to understand how important it is to establish her down and stop allowing her front side to immediately eject up and back.
These young athletes have to learn how to accept pressure into the front side and hold it long enough to work through it. That down builds the movement habits that allow them to later understand when and how much they need to turn it up.
Own the down first. Then learn to use the up.

Worked on reestablishing the down and not pulling the ball. So grateful that I was able to work with the best and get ready for the rest of the season!

This young lady puts in the work! A local hitter who takes notes and creates her own drawings in her notebook to understand what weāre working on. She takes ownership of the process week after week.
Weāve been working on flattening her shoulder path and establishing more front-side compression at foot down and she absolutely CRUSHES this ball!
I love how the center fielder thought she had a play⦠meanwhile, the ball lands up in a tree in left center!
Keep working, girl! Your hard work is showing!

I love hearing, āMy kid keeps getting under the ball and popping it up.ā
Okay, but why?
āDropping her handsā describes the problem without explaining what causes it.
When she picks up her stride foot, her rear leg loses the heel and pushes forward instead of pulling her into foot down. Her lat canāt control her hands and arms, her belly and rear femur push forward, and she fails to stabilize through her core. Her butt drops, she gets stuck on the backside, and she canāt move off her rear leg so sheās already dropping underneath a mid-thigh pitch before the barrel arrives.
Then her front leg locks out instead of accepting pressure. She falls backward, creating a steep shoulder path.
The hands are attached to the body. When the body drops and falls backward, the barrelās path changes with it. What looks like a hand problem starts with how she moves underneath those hands.
Before telling her to stop dropping her hands or getting under the ball, help her understand the movement causing it.

Wren is back in from South Carolina for two days of work her second trip up to New Jersey.
What I love about this young lady is the responsibility sheās taking for her swing. Taking notes, writing down what sheās learning, and understanding the why behind the movements. Thatās taking ownership of the process that builds repeatable patterns.
She passes a whole lot of hitting instructors coming all the way up here, and that trust means a lot to me. Weāre building a strong working relationship, and she knows how deeply I care about her development.
Establishing pressure into the ground, learning how to use that force, and building the movement from the ground up. Thereās a purpose behind what we do, and Wren is putting in the work to understand it.

Fall break gave me the chance to spend two days in New Jersey breaking down movement and building better habits. Lots of work on staying centered, getting into the ground, controlling my barrel, and owning my load. Thank you, @SangilloJohn, for helping me understand how better ol translate into power. Grateful for your knowledge and investment in helping me grow as a hitter. So much to take home and keep working on!
