My eternal struggle with Halloween or just costumes in general is I always want to do scary cool looks but no matter what makeup I do I don’t look evil or scary in the SLIGHTEST 😭 like I can look unsettling in the way a doll is unsettling but that’s about it

I always think of this great quote from Brennan Lee Mulligan in these cases because while I feel like this principle is common sense, people still seem to assume that ideological codes/rules are so powerful that they can override a persons true beliefs.

I want to help people interpret this tweet because many are struggling. When I say “worse than I thought” I’m proposing a counterfactual situation: what I expected Trump 2 to be. I was expecting Hitler. Trump 2 is very bad, but not Hitler bad. I therefore am massively relieved that it’s not Hitler bad. So, although it is bad, though millions have died (as expected), the situation is much less bad than my expectation of how bad it was going to be. The fact that my expectations of how bad it was going to be are worse than what it is, does not imply that what it is, is not bad. Merely that it is less bad than the counterfactual situation—that is, less bad than my expectations.

The way his fans and employees are acting you would think Ethan Klein had pulled off some great magic trick throughout his career to disguise how bigoted and gross of a person he is. But considering their participation right alongside him perhaps it’s an avoidance of looking in the mirror

Trying to separate a person’s politics from their behavior is disingenuous. Ignorance despite being given opportunities to become informed is selfish, and therefore prioritizing one’s own comfort over the lives of others. Trying to paint Ethan as someone who cares about marginalized people is ignoring a long string of actions that prove otherwise.
