Florida has reported 2,602,813 ballots so far:
🔵 Democrats: 1,034,980 (39.76%)
🔴 Republicans: 1,032,302 (39.66%)
🟣 NPAs: 471,999 (18.13%)
⚪ Other parties: 63,532 (2.44%)
Democrats and Republicans are almost even. Republicans have about 1.54 million more registered voters in Florida. They started with a much larger pool of voters, yet the two parties have produced almost the same number of ballots.
How much of each group has actually shown up?
Nearly 25% of registered Democrats have already voted, compared with 18% of Republicans. Democrats are about 30% of the voter rolls but account for almost 40% of ballots so far.
To me, this is a sign of Democratic enthusiasm: A larger share of a smaller voter base is showing up.
Republicans are showing up, too. They lead in-person early voting by 95,015 ballots.
The GOP’s registration advantage gives them room to produce more ballots at a lower participation rate. They can take the numerical lead without matching the percentage of Democrats who have voted. That doesn’t make Republican turnout weak. It makes the size of each party’s voter base essential to understanding these numbers.
NPAs are the group I’m watching closely. Nearly a quarter of Florida’s registered voters have no party affiliation, but they account for only about 18% of ballots reported so far. Their participation is trailing both major parties.
There’s plenty of talk about NPAs deciding close races. I’m watching whether their turnout catches up. Their potential influence is considerable, but how many actually show up will determine how much of that influence they have.
