1/ gaiia, out of Quebec City, builds the billing and operations software that small internet providers run on. $40M USD Series B, led by JMI Equity with Montreal's Inovia Capital also in. Utility software, and I find that more interesting than most AI launches.

Tenstorrent raised $1.5 billion USD this week to take on Nvidia, and it's a Toronto founded company that moved its headquarters to Santa Clara in 2023. Good for them. Toronto is still its biggest office, so the engineers stayed while the head office went south, and I keep coming back to that split because Nigerian fintechs do the same thing with Delaware. Is Canada fine being the R&D department for other countries' champions?

Manitoba now doubles the power rate for crypto miners and AI data centres, and the revenue is supposed to lower household Hydro bills. Sensible on paper. But no data centre currently crosses the 5 megawatt line, so the money comes almost entirely from crypto operators, the same people who said this law would shut their sector down. I have shipped billing logic for a customer class that barely existed yet, and the forecast always looked great until the first real invoice. The government says the levy could raise up to $20 million, so what happens to the household credit if the miners leave first?

UniUni's SPAC deal with MAK is dead after MAK said the delivery company blew past its maximum allowed pre tax loss, on a deal pitched above US$1 billion. The part I keep coming back to is that a loss cap existed at all, which means everyone knew burn was the risk. I've watched payments teams chase volume while per transaction margin went negative and the dashboards still looked great. Did anyone actually diligence the unit economics?

1/ Coral is a virtual clinic in Montreal, Quebec for women in perimenopause and menopause. Founded in 2024. Chair Anna Chif cofounded Dialogue, which Sun Life acquired in 2023, then hit hormonal changes she called completely debilitating. Coral grew out of that.

6/ Company reported results within 90 days: 80% of members say their mental wellbeing improved significantly, and over 70% see an important drop in symptoms. The release gives no member count behind those numbers, so I'd want to know how many people that covers.

7/ You can find Coral at coral.ca. The March 2026 funding news is on Business Wire, and BetaKit covered the original seed round in February 2025.

Anthropic leased its first Canadian data centre on EverWind's Nova Scotia campus.
Nigerian grids taught me uptime is really an energy problem, so the wind part matters more to me than the compute. The framework they signed is voluntary though. Who enforces it?

Idempotency keys only protect you if you scope them right. I once keyed on the merchant order ID alone, and a customer who changed the cart amount after a timeout got the old charge replayed back to them as a success. The key matched, the payload didn't, and we returned the cached response anyway.
Now I store a hash of the request body next to the key and reject the call with a 422 when the same key shows up with different params. Stripe does the same, and it's the part most people skip.
Still not sure what the right key TTL is on bank rails where settlement can lag by days. Anyone landed on a number that held up?

ResolvMD built its medical billing product around Alberta's system, then had to rebuild it for OHIP and pass Ontario's conformance testing before it could submit claims there. That is the part nobody puts in the launch post. I've done integrations where the spec said one thing and the sandbox said another, and the sandbox always wins. They take 1.95% of paid claims, so every rejected claim costs them as much as it costs the doctor. Does a province by province rails problem ever get fixed, or does every startup pay the same toll again in BC?

Partial indexes are underused in Postgres.
CREATE INDEX idx_orders_pending ON orders (created_at) WHERE status = 'pending';
Most of our orders were completed, so a full index was dead weight on every insert.
Caveat: the planner only uses it if your query repeats that WHERE. A t me once.

Anthropic signed a long term lease on a $10 billion Nova Scotia data centre, and EverWind will fund its own grid upgrades. I've seen in Nigeria what happens when big power users share a grid with everyone else. The principles both signed are voluntary, so who checks in 2028?

Ukraine's military satellite access was reportedly cut off while missiles hit Kyiv, and Ukrainian officials say the order came from Washington. The US denies it. Either way, the question for Canada is who holds the off switch, not who is friendly this year. DND has paid about $68 million so far this year to Google, Amazon, Microsoft and their Canadian subsidiaries, per The Maple. I have shipped payment flows that sat on one vendor's goodwill, and nobody wrote the exit plan until the vendor changed terms. Does anyone in Ottawa have a tested failover, or just a procurement slide that says sovereign?

Tenstorrent just raised $1.5 billion USD, and the company that started in Toronto has been headquartered in Santa Clara since 2023. Toronto still has its biggest office, which is nice, but I keep coming back to who owns the upside. I watched talent and companies drift out of Nigeria for the same reasons, and Canada is doing it with better paperwork. If the IPO happens, will anyone here get to call it a Canadian win?

Webhook handlers that return 200 only after the ledger write commits are the ones that survive retry storms. The first processor integration I shipped did the opposite. We acked on receipt and queued the work, the queue backed up, and the provider's retries arrived out of order, so a refund event posted before the original capture and hit a balance that didn't exist yet. It took us two days of reconciliation to find the gap. Now every event gets a dedupe key from the provider's event id, and I treat ordering as something my handler has to tolerate, not something the provider promises. Do you store the raw event before you process it, or after?

Tenstorrent raised $1.5 billion USD at a $6.2 billion valuation. Founded in Toronto, headquartered in Santa Clara, biggest office still Toronto. I've watched payments founders make the same move to scale, and I'm not sure we get to call it a Canadian win. Still ours?

Ukraine lost its military satellite link last Wednesday, and Ukrainian officials say the order to cut Starshield came from the White House. The US denies it. BetaKit adds that Canada's DND has paid nearly $68 million to Google, Amazon, Microsoft and their Canadian subsidiaries this year, per The Maple.
I have shipped payment code that depended on one vendor's API, and the exit plan was always a slide nobody tested. When we finally needed it, switching away turned out to be a rebuild. Does Carney's pledge to diversify away from Starlink include anyone actually running the failover drill?
