Healthcare dominates the 2026 midterms, yet no candidate is pitching a market-based public option: trading $10K work insurance for a $6,500 buy-in.
Instead of an unfunded Medicare for All mandate that would blow up the federal deficit, Luigi Zingales proposes letting every eir pre-tax benefit to buy into Medicaid and pocket the remaining $3,500 tax-free.

An economist can help a government understand why prices are rising, help a business decide what to charge, or investigate why workers’ wages are stagnating. Who employs that economist helps determine which questions get attention, and whose problems they are paid to solve.
Research in ProMarket by Markus Eberhardt, Giovanni Facchini, and Valeria Rueda examined 11,625 candidates from 33 leading U.S. economics PhD programs between 1998 and 2022. They found a striking trend that graduates are increasingly entering jobs outside academia.
As more economics graduates join private companies, their employers’ priorities help determine which problems they work on. Will more of their expertise go toward increasing corporate profits?

The share entering academia fell from roughly two-thirds in 2009 to half by the early 2020s. Public institutions, including central banks, the IMF, and the World Bank, remained the largest destination outside academia, but their share declined. At the same time, tech’s share rose from roughly 1% around 2010 to 12% by the early 2020s. Amazon accounted for more than 40% of tech placements.

A government may not need to shut down a newspaper to weaken it. It may only need to influence which news links people see.
That’s the concern raised by new research from Andrey Simonov, Daniil Mikhailov, Ruben Enikolopov, and Ruben Durante in ProMarket.
After a 2016 Russian law pushed Yandex, the country’s largest news aggregator, to narrow the outlets it recommended, independent sources’ share of its top news links fell from 20% to 10%.

AI labs can't afford to slow down alone, and antitrust law won't let them slow down together.
An antitrust waiver would solve that, but it risks handing the biggest labs the power to decide who gets to compete. The federal government could step in to regulate, but has not shown the willingness to do so.
Writing in ProMarket, Noah Hoffman and Fiona Scott Morton argue there's another way, and it doesn't need an act of Congress.

This would give AI companies a way to address the dangers they’re warning about while preventing safety measures from becoming a tool for shutting out competition.
