Most people would recognize this painting (fresco) immediately. Especially if you’re old enough like me to have owned a Nokia phone.
But how many know its name, its artist, or have really looked closely? Buckle up. This fresco will hit different after today. Mind blown nteresting at parties) guaranteed.đź§

Most people think the Bible says Adam and Eve ate an apple. It doesn’t.
Genesis never names the fruit. The Hebrew word used in Genesis 3:2–3 and 3:6 is simply peri, which means “fruit.” The woman refers to “the fruit of the tree,” and later she takes “of its fruit.” No specific fruit is mentioned.
The apple came later. A Latin pun (malum can mean both “evil” and “apple”) plus centuries of Western art turned a generic fruit into a specific one.
The bitten apple on your phone is a modern logo.
Seeing a direct connection from that logo back to the origin of evil is a clear example of apophenia (spotting a meaningful connection that the text itself does not support).
What’s the name for this kind of phenomenon where people make outlandish claims nowadays with no basis whatsoever. The basis being its being repeated over and over without any foundational evidence?

Billions of people carry a bitten apple in their pocket.
Almost no one knows it's the emblem of where evil started 🧵

A bad workman always blames his tools.
I think a better one is
A bad workman will never find a good tool.

People are quick to condemn others to hell.
But what if no one actually goes to hell?
Most picture hell to be fire, fury and physical torture.
But in theology, it’s actually more terrifying.

3/ If God is the source of all goodness, beauty and truth, then evil is the total absence of all that.
So hell, is a state not a place.

4/ Hell is a state of deprivation of God I.e everything good.
Of course this picture is harder to paint or picture.
If you were to paint this, how would you do it? Just pure darkness so basically all black painting?

Whats a fancy way to call someone an idiot?
Idiotism.
The word is older than the insult.
In ancient Greek an idiotes was simply a private person. Someone who stayed out of the city’s affairs and kept to themselves.
It’s not a compliment or some protect your peace bs.
The zens to show up.
Withdrawal from society was treated as a problem.
Neal Curtis took the same root (idiot, one’s own) and used it as a lens for modern capitalism.
He argues that late capitalism turns private interest into the default language for almost everything.
Your time, attention, relationships, even rest get treated as personal assets to manage.
Shared concerns diminish in priority until they start to sound naĂŻve or optional.
The system gets more efficient as the person inside it gets more isolated.
How would you now use the word idiotism?

The Father of capitalism warned us….
Smith admitted there’s a real cost for the division of labour. That being the worker becomes as he puts it “as stupid and ignorant as possible for a human creature to become”
Marx went further.
He argued that the narrowing of workers is not al.
Marx calls it “alienation”.
Where the worker is separated from the product, ultimately control over the process and from their own creative capacities.
The work becomes forced or coerced rather than an expression the persons abilities.
Some would say Marx sees this as dehumanising or damage to the “human soul” or essence.
But Marx usually took a more materialist stance and steered clear of the word soul.
Smith admits there’s a cost.
Marx clarified the cost.

Most arguments about capitalism skip this part.
Smith noticed that a man who only straightens wire all day, year after year, starts to lose the ability to do anything else. Before the work was split into steps, each person in the pin factory knew how to make an entire pin.
The the pins cheaper.
It also made the workers narrower.
Smith even wrote that the division of labour risks turning people “as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become.”
The productivity gain is undeniable.
But so was the cost.
Is a specialized workforce the ideal system for production?
If you made it this far, thanks for reading. Keep pondering.

Can people change?
The one thing we can change is the story we tell ourselves. And we are the story we tell ourselves.
So yes we can change.

Buddhism says something pretty close. The mind is what turns outside events into suffering or peace. The events themselves are secondary….🧵
“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
— Marcus Aurelius
Pretty Buddhist of Marcus eh

3/ Both traditions noticed that people waste most of their energy trying to rearrange the world so their mind can finally relax.
Traffic, other people’s opinions, outcomes that already happened.
The advice is to reverse the order.
Train the mind first.
The outside stuff becomes less urgent once it stops owning your reactions.

4/ The overlap is not perfect.
Marcus Aurelius was definitely not Buddhist nor was he influenced by it I doubt.
Aurelius still cared about duty and the roles you play in the world.
Buddhism pushes further toward non-attachment, including to those roles.
But both put the inner response first and treat the outer event as secondary.
Two traditions, centuries and continents apart, with similar perspectives of reality.
That does not prove it is true.
It does make it harder to dismiss as one culture’s quirk.
