Building a strong privacy culture in our communities requires placing educational institutions—and especially students—at the center of data protection discussions.
On Thursday, in partnership with the @MakRuleofLaw , the @ug_lawsociety, @PollicyOrg , the @pdpoUG ,, and the ction Practitioners, we hosted the Makerere University Data Protection Dialogue at the School of Law.
The event brought together students from various universities, legal professionals, data protection practitioners, and civil society actors. Attendees heard insightful keynote addresses from the National Director of the PDPO and the Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, and an expert panel discussion. We were also delighted to present awards to the winners of our essay competition.
Our sincere appreciation goes out to all our panelists, speakers, partners, and attendees for making the event a success!

This week, our team is in Addis Ababa for the Eastern Africa Regional Convening on Reimagining the Future of Human Rights in Africa, a regional dialogue on emerging threats to human rights and priorities for protection and accountability.
Our colleagues joined a panel on human ge, discussing AI, surveillance, online hate and #TFGBV.
One point stood out: we can't hold AI accountable if we don't understand how it works.
The discussions also raised questions about who benefits from African #data, who is responsible when women are harmed online, and whether African-built technologies are held to the same human rights standards as Big Tech.
At Pollicy, these questions are central to our work on a #SafeAndJoyfulInternet and more accountable data and technology governance.

“They cannot legislate what they don’t understand.”
This came up during a two-day bootcamp with women legislators and civil society leaders in Côte d’Ivoire, where our colleagues discussed what it takes to address #TFGBV.
Côte d’Ivoire has laws covering cybercrime, data ased violence. But gaps remain in how TFGBV is specifically addressed, and limited gender data makes it harder to develop effective policy responses.

One proposal was to develop an advocacy brief outlining these gaps and the case for legislative action.
The discussions also highlighted the need for government support and greater accountability from technology platforms. Women cannot carry the burden of online safety alone.
to Pollicy's priorities on a #SafeAndJoyfulInternet and #DataPolicy.

Pollicy is in Bali this week for #ICANN87.
Its Annual General Meeting brings together government, civil society, the private sector, and the technical community to discuss DNS abuse mitigation, registration data, and the next round of domain names.
Gender perspectives often go nversations, so we have been asking whose experiences are being considered.
Our work sits at the intersection of #data, #digitalrights, and design, and we are here to make sure gender is part of the conversation.

What will it take for women leaders in #Tanzania to take part in democracy without being pushed offline?
This week, 20 decision makers joined our #TFGBV Key Stakeholder Bootcamp in Tanzania, from government, police, the judiciary, media, telecoms, political parties, academia, y.
We worked from The Cost of Candidacy and @JamiiForums research, and left with one clear takeaway: a safe and joyful internet needs a united voice.
