Amazing opportunities to work as part of a fantastic lab with a great supervisor!
Two more opportunities to join my @EcoSAGElab as an @ARIES_DTP funded PhD student: (1) studying nature-based solutions for warming impacts on rivers aries-dtp.ac.uk/studentships/o… (2) modelling future Southern Ocean ecosystems aries-dtp.ac.uk/studentships/h… Applications due by January.

Testing the landscape theory of #foodweb architecture in a massive lake shows evidence that large, mobile predators integrate energy from different trophic pathways. Traits such as body size and foraging behavior help predict the structure of food webs

I had a wonderful viva experience, thanks @otolithgirl & @MEecoprof for such an enjoyable discussion! And thanks of course to @ejogorman,@Dr_MTaylor,@Hollyman_Phil and Simeon Hill for their great supervision and support throughout the PhD! @EssexLifeSci @BAS_News
Super proud of @PolarPaddy, my first PhD student to completion since joining @Uni_of_Essex five years ago. Two great papers already (nature.com/articles/s4146…; frontiersin.org/journals/marin…), @DefraGovUK lucky to have him for now, and a very promising career ahead. Congrats Paddy! 👏 👏

North Sea fossil fuel can cause pollution to spike 10k%

Researchers from @EssexLifeSci , @NHM_London and @CefasGovUK also found species fell by 30% near platforms.

@DrNatalieHicks 🔉 "These platforms are leaving a potentially concerning legacy."

Super excited to have received @LeverhulmeTrust funding with @stefanako71 to explore how environmental DNA analysis can turbo-boost the reconstruction of aquatic food webs across habitat types and over multiple time scales. Watch this space for 2 x 3-year post doc opportunities.

Learned so much from @Alain_Zuur & Elena Ieno this week on our course about GLMM & GAMMs with spatial-temporal data at the @Uni_of_Essex. Everyone book yourself a course/buy a book! Now trying to figure out which dataset I use my precious 1-on-1 hour to discuss with them! 🤔 🤓🐟

With prey size from 10 Southern Ocean lanternfish species across 10° of latitude, Eskuche-Keith et al. show that higher temperatures were associated with smaller fish & a decrease in the size of fish relative to prey.
