How can art take on one of the most pressing questions facing humanity: Can we use AI and digital tools ethically when corporations feed our data into AI models at the Earth’s expense?
In her exhibition for Pioneer Works, “Child/ren of the Bloom,” LaJuné McMillian uses a gaming engine, 3-D printing, and AI alongside beadwork and embroidery to imagine what a more reciprocal relationship with technology and our oceanic ecosystems might look like. On view at Pioneer Works through Dec 20.

In a new exhibition at PW, artist Finnegan Shannon built a conveyor belt to carry objects made by other artists, shaping a display of collective knowledge around different ways of engaging with art.
Shannon’s work flips the museum’s usual restrictive politics through a parade of e touched, benches made to be actually sat on, and a 12-foot mechanized conveyor belt that brings the art to the seated viewer. As Shannon puts it, “My work is so dependent on other artists.”
“There’s no me without you” is on view at Pioneer Works until December 20, 2026.

how did @danielkolitz become the most-talked about magazine writer today? by reading voraciously, going to at least (2) critical parties, simmering away at a PR day job, and not a little bit of agonizing over The Longform Podcast.... deezlinks.com/p/i-would-not-…

Phytoplankton may be tiny, but ocean life depends on them. For the artist LaJuné McMillian, they’re also a model for sovereignty—one that begins with the self and extends to the collective. pioneerworks.org/broadcast/laju…

Environmental historian Matthew Shutzer (@mshutzer) considers why a society whose only organizing models were “Marx or Hitler or Henry Ford” would inevitably summon a climate crisis.

For PW Broadcast, environmental historian Matt Shutzer (@mshutzer) of @UCBHistory writes on how fossil-fueled consumption and the atomic bomb shaped early warnings of our planet warming. pioneerworks.org/broadcast/like…
