Finally! The truth about the man with a hand of smoke!
It's weird historical advertisement Thursday - and today, shortly before Halloween, we explore the weird psychic phenomena of the early 1900s. 1/👻

Let's not forget that the EEG we still use today was discovered when Hans Berger tried to prove the phenomenon of telepathy.

He didn't, but he published a landmark paper in 1929 documenting alpha waves (Berger waves). 3/👻

What are Neglected Tropical Diseases or NTDs and why are they neglected? 🌍

NTDs are a group of 21 conditions that affect more than one billion people globally. They are caused by a variety of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and toxins. They're because they have historically been almost absent from the global health agenda.

They disproportionally affect those who lack safe water, sanitation, adequate housing, education, and information, as well as excessively affecting women, girls, and underserved and mobile communities. While the largest number of people requiring NTD interventions live in Asia, the largest share of the burden of disease in terms of mortality and morbidity is found in Africa.

The 21 NTDs are:

• Buruli ulcer
• Chagas disease
• dengue and chikungunya
• dracunculiasis
• echinococcosis
• foodborne trematodiases
• human African trypanosomiasis
• leishmaniasis
• leprosy
• lymphatic filariasis
• mycetoma, chromoblastomycosis, and other deep mycoses
• noma
• onchocerciasis
• rabies
• scabies and other ectoparasitoses
• schistosomiasis
• soil-transmitted helminthiases
• snakebite envenoming
• taeniasis/cysticercosis
• trachoma
• yaws

To not know that much about Lyme
It's fastidious, hard to grow
There will be many things you don’t know

Wish USMLE board review and Street Fighter had a love child? If so, have I got a game for you!

Pretty nifty way to gamify board review questions. Needs an Infectious Disease option, tho!
I made a retro arcade fighting game where doctors beat each other up with medical trivia.

First, do no harm. THEN FINISH HIM.

It's weird historical advertisement Thursday, but today I'm advertising the phenomenal collections in the @OslerLibrary and Maude Abbott Medical Museum at McGill University.

Read more about Abbott (and Osler!) in this thread 1/
I was looking back at this and realized I never told you about Maude Abbott (who should one day be in Endowed Chairs: Medicine).
Abbott is incredible for many reasons - and one of them was her mentorship to Taussig, preserved in a series of letters held at @mcgillu library. 1/

Taenia saginata occurs wherever cattle husbandry is prevalent and where human feces is not disposed of properly. It is commonly called the “beef tapeworm” because the juvenile stage of the parasite is found only in cattle, the intermediate host.
