Remembrance Sunday can bring pride, connection, and reflection for many, but for some veterans it is a difficult day. Memories of service, loss of friends, the transition to civilian life, or symptoms linked to trauma can feel heavier around this time.

You are not alone if the day feels overwhelming, isolating, or triggering. Feeling this way does not diminish your service or your right to support.

Practical ways to look after yourself

β€’Plan the day in advance. Decide what level of involvement (if any) feels manageableβ€”watching from home, attending quietly, or stepping away if needed.
β€’Stay connected on your terms. Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or fellow veteran, even briefly.
β€’Use grounding techniques if memories or anxiety rise (focus on breathing, name five things you can see, or step outside for fresh air).
β€’Limit alcohol if it tends to intensify difficult feelings.
β€’Give yourself permission to rest or change plans. Looking after your wellbeing is not a failure to remember.

Immediate and specialist support

If you need to talk today or in the days around Remembrance:
β€’Combat Stress (veterans’ mental health specialist, 24/7 helpline for veterans and families): 0800 138 1619 (text 07537 173683 or email helpline@combatstress.org.uk)
β€’Samaritans (24/7, confidential): 116 123.
β€’NHS 111 (select mental health option where available) or 999 in an emergency.
β€’Op COURAGE (NHS Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service, England): Self-referral or via GP/charity for support with transition difficulties, trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use, and wider needs (housing, employment, relationships). Regional numbers available on nhs.uk/opcourage

Broader ongoing support

β€’VALOUR (UK-wide navigation service): Helps connect you to local and national support for mental health, housing, employment and more. Call MOD Veterans Services on 0808 1914 218 (option 6).
β€’Royal British Legion: 0808 802 8080 - welfare advice, signposting and community support.
β€’SSAFA Forcesline: 0800 260 6780 (weekday hours) - practical, emotional and financial help.
β€’Help for Heroes (Hidden Wounds therapy) and Togetherall (anonymous online peer support) are also available.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have additional local pathways such as Veterans First Point (Scotland) and Veterans NHS Wales.

Many of these services are staffed by people who understand military life or work closely with the armed forces community.

Help is free for eligible veterans (generally one full day of UK service is enough) and often open to family members too.

If today feels hard, reaching out is a practical step, not a weakness. Support exists precisely so no one has to carry the weight alone. Look after yourself and each other.

@PappeP Red 2026: How One Biker's Idea Became a Movement Built Around Remembrance
On Sunday 8 November, thousands of motorcyclists are expected to take to Britain's roads wearing red, not for a rally, a race or a celebration, but to remember those who served and sacrificed. From London's0 and beyond, Ring of Red has become one of motorcycling's most remarkable annual acts of remembrance.
