Kingston Flemings on playing an NBA game back in Houston and seeing friends from the University of Houston, including many of the managers and GAs who'd stay in the gym late with him as he worked on his shot. Flemings just talked to Kelvin and Kellen Sampson after UH's exhibition "We're constantly communicating about the games," Flemings says. "Them giving me advice on the season. 'It's a long season. Just keep going.' That's what they've been telling me."
Kingston Flemings' proud mom Shayla Flemings to @PaperCityMag on watching her son play an NBA game in Houston just one year after his one and only UH season started: "I thought Kingston had what it took to get in the league. But I didn't know that it was going to be one year. t his goals. So I knew he was going to try and reach
It.

"But it's amazing to see that after one year he's here now."

The Flemings saw UH assistant coach Kellen Sampson at an event earlier today. And Flemings' former UH teammate Chase McCarty is in Toyota Center to watch him play.

"They're like family," Shayla Flemings says. "When we picked Houston, it's because they felt like a family. And they still do."

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson did not disappoint in his speech at the inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff. Sampson tells a great Patrick Beverley story from his days with the Rockets with Beverley in the crowd. Follows that up with a Kingston Flemings truth. And he gives the type ampson can give. "Let me explain the difference in knowledge and wisdom," Sampson says. "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Now wisdom is knowing enough not to put it in a fruit salad.

"You guys understand that? As you get older you're going to understand what that means. What that means is don't always think you know all the answers."
Rudy Tomjanovich is the surprise guest at this inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff and the Rockets are interested in being more involved in future H-Town Tipoffs, sources tell @PaperCityMag. Event orchestrator Mike Pede says he expects future Tipoffs will be moved earlier in the kets' season opener as well to allow the team to participate, creating an even bigger basketball extravaganza.

Almost 600 people are at this first Tipoff. Pede says he was hoping for 300 when he first started planning it. Championship Houston Comets coach Van Chancellor, Otis Birdsong and Rickie Winslow are also all here.

Former Houston Rockets guard Patrick Beverley to @PaperCityMag on how Kelvin Sampson helped him make it in the NBA: "For Coach Sampson, obviously everyone knows him from college basketball. But I got the pleasure of having him (in the NBA with Sampson a Rockets assistant). For ch that approached me. He was the first coach that kind of gave me a ton of advice.

"He told me a story that he told (then Rockets head coach) Kevin McHale, you're going to have a big issue next year. And Kevin McHale didn't know what he was saying. But he said "Patrick Beverley is going to be your starting point guard of the Houston Rockets.' And it turned out that I was.

"Me and Coach Samps have had a relationship since then. I call him at the University of Houston when I'm in town to get some work in. He's just been a blessing since day one. So I'm fortunate."

One of the things University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson loved about the inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff is seeing the high school coach of the year award named after legendary Yates High School coach Greg Wise. "I think about a guy like Greg Wise," Sampson says. "He's coached for 30 some years and that's the first time they've had a Basketball Tipoff banquet. Think about that. I think I thought about that more than anything else.

"One of the greatest talent cities in the country is Houston. And I liked it when a lot of the kids' parents came over and wanted a picture or something. And looking in those kids' eyes and parents' eyes that's a good thing that (organizer) Mike (Pede) did yesterday.

"A good, good thing. I like the fact that they named one of the awards after Guy V. Lewis. The Guy V. Lewis Award goes to the Player of the Year in the city of Houston. I like the fact that they named another award after Greg Wise (the Greg Wise Coach of the Year Award) . . . To name one of the awards after Greg Wise, that's a good thing.

"Those two men did so much for basketball in this city. And I'm so glad that they're getting recognized. And it's an honor to have your name on an award that's going to live long after your days are gone.

"I loved seeing the excitement. I loved seeing Pat Beverley with his daughter. I loved seeing Rudy Tomjanovich. (Van) Chancellor. I loved seeing all the Cougar fans that were there. It was a good day. It was a good day.

"And I'm excited about the future of that event. I think Mike's onto something good there. I think a lot of good can come from that."

Yates High School coach Greg Wise on reaching 1,000 wins, getting calls from Texas Hall of Fame and Naismith officials: "I didn't even think about it till the last couple of years when it was close. . ." Wise reflects on the unlikely friendships he's built with NBA stars Kyrie And he thinks about all the teams he's coached over the decades, including that 2009 national championship squad at Yates. One thousand. That's a lot of wins and as University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson notes a lot of lives that Wise has changed.

Hall of Fame women's basketball coach Van Chancellor is disappointed to see the WNBA seemingly taking a step back by moving a Finals game to 12:30 pm EST so the NBA Hawks can play a regular season night game. "It's been an exciting Finals," Van Chancellor tells @PaperCityMag. "I Dream over there are having trouble finding a place to play.

"Oh lord, we got the championship of the WNBA. We oughta have an arena ready to roll."

Van Chancellor won four WNBA Championships as the coach of the Houston Comets, helming the league's first dynasty. And he wants to see the league put its most important games on the biggest stage to grow the game.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson to @PaperCityMag on Wednesday's inaugural H-Town Basketball Tipoff, which will give basketball the kind of leadoff event that only football's had in the past: "It's good for basketball in the city. . . But I applaud Mike P(ede) and the people that's ood for the city for basketball. . . I'm glad they're doing it. The coaches at Texas Southern, the coaches at Rice, the coaches at Houston Christian, Prairie View. It's good for those schools to get some recognition too. Because all those coaches work their butts off.

"It's good for everybody. It's good for basketball in the city. I've been at places over the years that they would do that. Have a little luncheon to start. But we've never had one here."

You've never made it. When you ain is when you're going to get beat out. And you're going to lose your job.

"You should live your life that 'I've got to earn my way every day.' You can't take days off. You're not allowed to. Because somewhere the guy that's going to take your job, he ain't taking a day off.

"So don't feel comfortable. Save your money. And live your life off the court that you would want your son to live. Those are the advices I give them."

Houston comes off the field after its season-altering 21-13 loss to Utah. Quarterback Conner Weigman keeps his helmet on all the way into the tunnel. Javion White slams his down on the turf in frustration. Assistant head coach Shawn Bell circles back to scoop up some of inside he field. Just a heartbreaking reality for the Cougars with the repercussions of what this loss means for Willie Fritz's team. And what was right there to be grabbed.

Utah is undefeated and four other Big 12 teams are 3-1. While Willie Fritz's team is 3-2 in the Big 12. UH has to hope for more Big 12 madness going forward now.

Kevin Durant on how different the Houston Rockets are with Fred VanVleet and Marcus Smart: "Last year we started in our backcourt, Twin (Amen Thompson) and Josh Okogie. And a lot of time those guys are being left at the 3-point line. And their men are helping guard guys in the t Fred and Marcus Smart out there who can keep the defense honest at the 3-point line and then Twin just roaming around just doing everything. Grabbing offensive rebounds, making assists, dunks, floaters, everything.

"That put everybody into a good position. That settle everybody into what they do best. You've seen how efficient Alpe (Sengun) was tonight. Bari (Smith Jr.). Everybody's just more efficient when they're just in their roles, doing what they do.

"Everybody had to play point guard by committee last year. And I think having a few natural point guards on our team, that's going to help everybody."
