This morning, I joined Rt. Hon. @RebeccaKadagaUG and Hon. @LillianAber for the High-Level Engagement on Durable Solutions for Refugees in Uganda, which brought together development partners at Marriott Hotel, Kampala.

Uganda has a commendable history of welcoming and protecting and persecution. However, hosting a significant refugee population has placed considerable demands on our schools, health facilities, water systems, land and other public services, at a time when humanitarian funding is declining and the national budget faces competing priorities.

Uganda remains committed to protecting refugees, but our commitment must be matched with stronger international support through predictable, multi-year funding for essential services in refugee-hosting communities.

The conflicts in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan demonstrate the need for sustained political engagement and regional cooperation to address the root causes of displacement. As always, Uganda is ready to work with countries of origin and regional institutions to promote peace, facilitate safe returns and support the reintegration of refugees into their home communities.

I pledged Parliament’s support in ensuring that donor funds are utilised transparently. We will also promote cooperation among legislators from refugee-hosting countries and countries of origin to fund durable solutions to the refugee crisis in the region.

I would like to thank @JanSadek, Head of the EU Mission and the entire EU fraternity, @JapanEmb_Uganda, as well as our other partners for their support.

In his remarks, Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, commended President Yoweri Museveni and the First Lady for their unwavering support towards making Uganda’s AFCON 2027 hosting dream a reality.

With only 232 days to go until the historic AFCON kicks off in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, I was pleased to witness the signing of an official sponsorship agreement between @CAF_Online and @TourismBoardUg at the Marriott Hotel in Kampala, making the Uganda Tourism Board an tournament.

This is a significant moment for Uganda’s tourism sector. AFCON offers us a valuable opportunity to showcase our tourism potential to millions of football fans and attract high-value tourists.
CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu informed us that the previous AFCON recorded a cumulative viewership of 3.2 billion. This partnership presents an enormous opportunity to market Uganda to a global audience and translate that visibility into increased tourist arrivals.

This is exactly the kind of global marketing our tourism sector needs. Sports and tourism are natural partners. Football fans can become tourists during and after the games.

With more partnerships of this kind, we can be confident of moving closer to our target of attracting five million tourists by 2030 and contributing to Uganda’s 10-fold growth strategy.

Hon. Musa Ecweru is a patriot and a brave commander. Those attacking him today are enemies of Uganda’s peace and stability. He has our full support. They all knew what Elweru was doing but now pretend not to know.
