From Guided-Missile to Next Generation Corvettes: GRSE Advances Its Warship-Building Legacy
New Delhi/Kolkata, 02 November 2026: Marking a significant milestone in India's indigenous warship-building programme, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defetaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, signed a contract with the Indian Navy in New Delhi today for the construction of five Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs).
The contract, valued at approximately ₹32,000 crore, was signed by Shri Dinesh Kumar, IAS, JS & AM (MS), Ministry of Defence & Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, in the presence of Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, IAS, Defence Secretary of India, Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE, and other senior officials from Ministry of Defence, Indian Navy & GRSE.
GRSE had emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) for the prestigious project. The signing of the contract marks a major step forward in strengthening India's indigenous warship-building capabilities and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
Building on its extensive experience in the construction of guided-missile and anti-submarine warfare corvettes, GRSE will now undertake the construction of these next-generation warships, which will feature enhanced capabilities, advanced sensors and sophisticated weapons systems. The project further reinforces the shipyard's position as a key contributor to India's maritime defence preparedness and indigenous warship design and construction.
The Next Generation Corvettes will measure 127 metres in length and 17.6 metres in beam, with a specified deadweight tonnage of 4,950 tonnes. The warships will have an endurance of 14 days at sea without replenishment and a maximum speed of 26 knots. Designed to accommodate 11 officers and 139 sailors, the vessels will be built to the classification requirements of a Naval Headquarters-approved classification society.
The corvettes will feature an advanced Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine–Cross-Connect (CODAG-CC) propulsion arrangement, driving two Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP). This propulsion architecture is designed to support the operational requirements of these versatile frontline combat platforms. Designed for a wide spectrum of maritime missions, the NGCs will undertake multi-role operations, including offensive ship-to-ship and ship-to-surface missile attacks, anti-missile defence, anti-submarine warfare, escort duties, maritime interdiction operations (MIO), including Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), and local naval defence.
To support these missions, the warships will be equipped with an advanced suite of weapons, sensors and navigation systems. The proposed systems include Medium Range Anti-Ship Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) and 324 mm torpedo tubes. The armament suite will also include an OTO Melara 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) with the latest upgrade, an AK-630 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) and 12.7 mm Stabilised Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCGs) integrated with an Electro-Optic-based Fire Control System (EOFCS).
The sensor suite will include an Electro-Optical Infrared Search and Track (EOIRST) system and a Multi-Function Surveillance, Track and Guidance Radar (MFSTAR). The corvettes will also have helicopter-operating capabilities, enhancing their operational flexibility across a range of maritime scenarios.

GRSE Achieves Another Milestone in German Export Project with Keel Laying of Fifth MPV
Kolkata (29 Oct, 2026): Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, achieved another mileshipbuilding programme with the keel-laying ceremony of the fifth Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) being built for Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG on Thursday, 29 Oct 26. The milestone marks steady progress in one of GRSE’s most significant export projects and reinforces its commitment to the vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’.
The MPV project represents the largest commercial shipbuilding export order secured by GRSE, reflecting the shipyard’s expanding capabilities in the international commercial shipbuilding market. The project also underscores GRSE’s strategic focus on diversifying its portfolio and strengthening its presence in the global maritime sector.
The ceremony was graced by senior officials from GRSE, Carsten Rehder and DNV.
The project entails the design and construction of twelve CORAL 7500 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessels, developed in collaboration between GRSE and Germany’s Carsten Rehder. The first contract, signed in June 2024, covered four vessels. The fifth vessel is the first of four MPVs being built under the second contract, signed in October 2024. A third contract, signed in September 2025, covered the four hybrid-propulsion MPVs, taking the total order of MPVs to twelve.
Each vessel will measure 120 metres in length, with a beam of 17 metres and a draught of 5.85 metres, and will have a deadweight capacity of 7,500 tonnes. Designed for operational versatility, the vessels will feature a large cargo hold capable of accommodating bulk, general and project cargo. Their design will also permit the carriage of containers on hatch covers and multiple wind turbine blades on deck, providing flexibility to meet diverse cargo transportation requirements.
The MPVs are being developed in collaboration with leading German maritime companies, including F.H. Bertling, ForestWave Navigation/Schulte & Bruns, and Delft Shipping. Technical design support is being provided by M/s SEDS in association with GRSE, while DNV will undertake the classification and certification of the vessels.

Supporting India’s Offshore Energy Sector: GRSE Signs Four-Vessel Contract with ONGC
New Delhi/Kolkata (15 Oct, 2026): Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, has signed a contal Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for the construction of four Hybrid Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs), marking a significant step forward in the shipyard’s foray into specialised offshore support vessels. The contract follows the Notification of Award received by GRSE on 30 July 2026.
The contract was signed by Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN(Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Shri Ratnesh Kumar, Executive Director (Strategy), ONGC, in the presence of Shri Satyen Kumar, Director (Technical), ONGC, Shri Bhaskar Chowdary Nettem, Director (Production), ONGC, and senior officials from GRSE & ONGC.
The project marks an important addition to GRSE’s commercial shipbuilding portfolio, extending its capabilities in the specialised offshore support vessel segment. The vessels will support ONGC’s offshore exploration and production operations, contributing to the maritime infrastructure required by India’s energy sector.
With an overall length of approximately 80 metres, a beam of 20 metres and a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, each vessel will feature a clear deck area of around 650 square metres and an endurance of 45+3 days. Designed and built in accordance with the Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), the vessels will be equipped to undertake a range of offshore logistics and support functions.
A defining feature of the project is the incorporation of an advanced hybrid propulsion architecture, comprising electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System. The battery system will support peak load management, spinning reserve, dynamic positioning operations and emergency response functions. This configuration is intended to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of vessel operations.
The ONGC contract represents a further step in diversifying GRSE’s order portfolio and applying its shipbuilding expertise to the requirements of the commercial maritime and offshore energy sectors.
