Alex Pentland's lab at MIT put wearable sensors on office workers, tracking movement and face-to-face interaction, then compared the patterns with measures of performance.
The most important place in the office was the copy machine.
Nobody was doing inspired photocopying. People had to wait. While they waited, they talked, and ideas got mentioned before they were fully formed.
Bell Labs found the same thing. Credentials and individual intelligence didn't explain which scientists produced an unusually large number of patents. Habits did. They ate in the cafeteria, many of them at the table of an engineer named Harry Nyquist, who listened and asked questions.
The person who solves the problem gets the credit. The idea rarely developed alone.
