OWASP AppSec USA 2026 was a little bit of everything! It was wonderful to catch up with old friends, meet so many new faces, exchange ideas, and have those lovely conversations that often continue long after the sessions are over.
One of the special moments for me was getting e my thoughts on Model Context Protocol (MCP) Security. I really enjoyed the questions, discussions, and different perspectives people brought to my session.

It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and throughout October, we’ll be sharing top tips from our OWASP project teams to help you build more secure software. 👀
🔥You can’t secure what you can’t see.
These five steps use OWASP @CycloneDX_Spec and OWASP @DependencyTrack to give ty into every component, supplier, and algorithm in your software and to turn that visibility into action.
1- Know what you ship. Generate a CycloneDX SBOM in every build, not once a year. Tools like cdxgen or the CycloneDX Maven and Gradle plugins do it in one step.
2- Find vulnerable components in minutes, not weeks. Upload your SBOMs to Dependency-Track. The next time a critical vulnerability drops, one portfolio search shows every project that uses the affected component.
3- Ask your suppliers for SBOMs. You inherit the risk in everything you buy. Make a CycloneDX SBOM part of procurement, then load it into Dependency-Track and monitor it like your own code.
4- Turn policy into guardrails. Dependency-Track policies can automatically flag forbidden licenses, critical vulnerabilities, or outdated components. Write the rule once and stop reviewing every release by hand.
5- Inventory your cryptography. A CycloneDX CBOM shows which algorithms, keys, certificates, and protocols you rely on. You can’t plan a post-quantum migration for crypto you can’t find.
