The city is a cross between an airport lounge and a mental asylum, and the local baker has recently quit because the streets are too dangerous to start work at 3-4am. There's a cuckoo house/crack den on my estate that's been there for at least a year. Feral city.

They'll extend the arrest on people silently praying outside abortion centres to "grumpy old man muttering under his breath on the way home from the last remaining pub in his area", "woman asking other people politely to wear headphones" and "person upset at having being robbed of their phone by man on a scooter wearing balaclava".
🚨 NEW: Respect Orders are now live across England and Wales

People who cause harassment, alarm or distress to others can receive bans from town centres, anger management courses or unlimited fines

Anyone who breaches an Order can be arrested and jailed for up to 2 years

This was an amusingly initially baffling paragraph. I rather wish there had been a canine newspaper that focused on Muslim life called "Our Dogs and Hyphen", even if it would have inevitably had to sack its 18 staff.

The British government is like "we're coming round to take the 2p coins from the crevasses of your couch and arresting you for playing Elgar and please buy baked beans so we can pretend the lines are moving and by the way we're paving over the countryside to build data centres that will be obsolete by the time they're finished and please can you just stop thinking and moving about already, you f***ing peasant."

The For You on X is like "here is an AI story translated from Tagalog that teaches a nonsensical moral lesson about kindness" + "the lockdowns were really about releasing imprisoned people from a global tunnel network" + "AI war will knock out the power for a hundred years".

Coming up at Verdurin: After Therapy
Suffering in the age of Big Mental Health

A symposium with Mark Vernon @platospodcasts, @AshleyAFrawley, and @JamesACMumford

📅 14 November, 2-6pm

The comedian Johnny Carson quipped that in Hollywood, if you veryone thought you were crazy. The joke has spread beyond Tinseltown. ‘Mental health’ content proliferates, ads for online therapy platforms are ubiquitous, and language once confined to the consulting room appears in corporate strategy documents. Welcome to the age of Big Mental Health.

Is there space for genuine illness in ‘mental health’ discourse? Can we still rely on Freud’s distinction between Freud’s “neurotic despair” and ordinary human misery? Do we need more or less therapy, and to what private, social, or political end?

This was a good one
Shakespeare weighs heavily on the British political imagination. The ‘living tradition’ has seen his plays adapted to contradictory ideas and adopted by warring ideological factions. The playwright is as often construed as a proto-liberal as his plays are taken to be the h concern with the social order.

In Shakespeare, Elites, Power, recorded at Verdurin in March 2026, Neema Parvini @AcademicAgent_X discussed the uses of the canon in contemporary political analysis with Oliver Bennett @renaldoandclara.

The Base presents an evening exploring Julius Caesar - the historical figure and Shakespeare’s play - on 16th November 2026 at the UnHerd Club in Westminster.

Esteemed Latin Professor David Butterfield, now Provost of Ralston College and formerly of Cambridge University, will us Caesar is the historical figure and the play to make sense of our time.

The evening will be an interactive exploration; a unique mixture of lecture, discussion and performance.

We bring to life extracts from Shakespeare’s play and together with Professor Butterfield, see what this moment of Roman history can teach us about power and control in the 21st century.

Tickets in bio.
