What makes love last? I’ve made it a habit to ask couples I meet in the hospital their secrets. This mini-comic with @washingtonpost shares some of the answers I’ve gotten over the years…
ā¤ļøHappy #ValentinesDay!

Many of us in medicine harbor strong feelings about what we’d be willing to go through in our health crisis. None of us truly knows what we’ll choose until we’re staring down the bull in the ring.

šŸ©ŗšŸ“š WEPA! Somebody check the vitals because THE HUMAN REMAINS has a PULSE.

Dr. Nathan A. Gray's The Human Remains: Drawing Out Compassion in Medicine isn't some white-coat victory lap. This graphic memoir gets under the hood of medical school, residency, burnout, emotional able question hiding underneath all of it:

What happens to the human inside the doctor while they're being trained to heal everybody else?

Gray brings the scalpel. The memoir brings the bruises. Comic Crusaders brings the diagnosis. šŸ”„

Enjoyed working on this paper on high-quality care for patients with small cell lung cancer alongside @drshieldsmd , Dr. Toby Campbell, and @sands_jacob (and enjoyed drawing a comic on introducing #palliativecare for it!)

Nothing like fresh air and sky when a pt’s been hospital-trapped. I’m always blown away by the way anxiety, irritability, and feelings of demoralization can melt away under the breeze and scents of the outside world. And grateful for clinicians and staff that make it happen.

Powerful editorial on corporitization of medicine.
1. Trainees are not cheap labor
2. Margin focus threatens trust.
3. Leaders need to stay in touch with clinical care

Happy #nurses week to all the amazing nurses I’ve had the honor to work with over the years. I have learned so much from the skill, compassion, and dedication of nursing colleagues who advocate, educate, guide, care, and give generously in hospital, clinic, research, & classroom.

So grateful for the growing emphasis on patient-centered outcomes in oncology care…

For many of my patients HOW they will live is just as important (or even more important for some) than HOW LONG they will live.

I never correct folks when they request ā€œno heroicsā€ in their medical care, because I know what they mean. But I’ve found serious illness care, even when the focus is exclusively on quality of life, to be jam-packed with heroism. #hapc #graphicmedicine

What do general pediatrics and outpatient palliative care have in common? (Thoughts from a palliative doc who started medical life thinking he’d be a general pediatrician…)
