Thank you, Dr. Kelly, for your very kind updated review of my new book: The Scientific Principles of Reading Instruction
@NateJoseph19 Make this text required reading for graduate students in education programs and maybe even adjuncts requiring more research understanding. Not only will your thinking about research be dynamically transformed, your use of the research will be thoughtful tailored…

"None of this is to say that there is never a place for discovery or inquiry in a Math class. However, research
does consistently show that more explicit instruction outperforms less explicit instruction, especially for
students with weak Math skills."

I have done a major update on my article on direct instruction vs inquiry based learning, thanks in no small part to Mat Burns new research, which really changed how my understanding of the topic.

Just got an email offer to pay me to endorse “high quality education products”. If your endorsement is for sale, it has no value.

Agree with this. Do wonder why (in general, not Helen) similar respect for differences in inquiry, student-centered, problem-based learning etc. also is in short supply.
I feel that most of things I'm posting atm rely on know the difference between DI (Direct Instruction) and di (direct instruction).
This is really helpful, because DI is NOT the only alternative with issues about intstruction:

Is AI a game changer for education, or something that will rot students' brains out?
I reviewed 20 meta-analyses on the topic to find out—and I am disappointed by what I found.

@PCSnow1604 That's why I think opportunity cost is the single most important idea in school improvement. Every hour our teachers—and our students—spend on one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. And this matters most of all for students who find learning hardest...

"during the last school year, a council of educators at both Palo Alto high schools rejected the [advanced math] course, arguing it would serve few students and set back equity and students’ well-being"
Right, math is harmful. Come on! What are we doing?
“If teaching math can harm students, then we have a lot bigger issues to talk about than whether to offer this course,” Nguyen told the Chronicle.
Indeed.
Brian Conrad, a Stanford mathematician, told the Chronicle that he felt math was treated as a “punching bag” for equity and mental health concerns.
“The school doesn’t cut sports teams simply because some kids are far more talented at sports,” he said.
“Why is it that the teaching of math generates much more controversy than other subjects?”

For YEARS, I was told to “meet students where they’re at”…
…then, I was questioned about why so many students are behind and need an IEP before they’re working at several grade levels BELOW their current grade level.
Districts have dug us into a hole and they do t know how to ed a culture of “meeting students where they’re at” with no actual plan to get them where they need to be.
Stop lowering the bar for our students! Raise the bar, provide support and explicit instruction and GET THEM TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE!
Best presentation I’ve heard in years! Dr. Huggins is saying what every teacher has been too scared to say out loud for years!! @researchEDCan

I used to teach science where I’d facilitate an experiment, stop it on occasion to explicitly teach, and then have them dive back in. While that was better than discovery learning, it was way worse than pre-teaching the science content. This is true of other subjects as well.

I honestly think Matt Burns deserves paper of the year for this one. This paper was years overdue. His secondary meta analysis directly compares IBL and DI. It showed that DI outperformed. No other meta, to my knowledge has made this direct comparison before.

What’s the deal with all the ads for listening to ebooks being faster than reading them. Reading is way faster.
