A glimpse into the interior of the National Picture Theatre revealed during excavation works! Highly decorative tiles, gas lamp wall brackets and local dairy milk bottles build a picture of life during the period. More can be discovered once restoration works are complete!

1/2 As today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we are reflecting on the impact of WW2 on those on the Home Front. The ordinary people who took on extraordinary roles to 'do their bit' for their country, keep others safe, and help to rebuild our city.

2/2 Mr Edward Crummay was the NPT Foreman. After everyone else was moved to safety at the front of the building, he returned to stoke up the boiler at the rear, just at the moment the bomb hit, & was blown right through the auditorium! Luckily, he wasn't seriously hurt!

1/2 On this day in 1941, the National Picture Theatre was partly destroyed by a bomb during one of Hull's worst aid raids of WW2. Luckily, none of the 150 people inside were killed or seriously injured, but in the nearby streets, many lives were lost, even inside the shelters.

2/2 Toys were simple & handmade. As the war progressed, recipes had 'mock' ingredients. Potatoes replaced meat. Vegetables & fruit for pies were largely homegrown & nothing was taken for granted. We'd love to hear your memories & family stories of wartime or Christmases past

1/2 As we approach Christmas, we've been looking back at Christmas during wartime Britain. People would've saved rations to make special puddings to keep up their festive spirits, gifts including homemade jams, chutneys, hats knitted from old unravelled jumpers, and also soap!

As excavations continue, so do new discoveries on site! Here, we've uncovered a chamber not on the original drawings, which will now create an additional interpretation area. The stained wall areas show the height of earth & rubble that have hidden it since the Blitz in 1941!

During WW2 a number of recipes ingredients were substituted, such as powdered eggs and milk, whilst other foods like bread were actually only rationed AFTER the war, due to ongoing shortages! Which foods do you remember being rationed or precious?
