@NASA @astro_anil Installing solar arrays in a pressurized suit at 17,500 mph is the most intense home improvement project in the solar system. Clear skies to both of them on the 29th and the 5th.

@NASA @astro_anil Canada's first ever spacewalk came in April 2001, when Chris Hadfield went outside on STS-100 to help install Canadarm2, the Canadian-built robotic arm.

@NASA @astro_anil The new iROSA panels arrive rolled up and unfurl like a giant tape measure. The first pair was installed on the station back in 2021.

@NASA @astro_anil Two spacewalks, Oct 29 and Nov 5, to finish installing new solar arrays on the station, per NASA. More power for more science ☀️

We make really expensive cold brew coffee.

Aged in oak barrels.

For months. Not days.

No alcohol. No sugar.

Every Friday an email gets sent.

No other way to purchase.

Link gets sent to our email list. And only to the list.

Gone in minutes.

See you on the list.

@NASA @astro_anil Finishing a solar array install in a spacesuit, while I still can't plug in a USB the right way first try. Good luck @astro_anil and Joshua 🚀

@NASA @astro_anil Finishing the roll out arrays on Oct 29 and Nov 5 is a big deal for a station this old. I'm curious how much power it actually gains once they're all in, compared with the original arrays as they age. Will you share before and after numbers?

@NASA @astro_anil Both arrays rode up in the unpressurized trunk of SpaceX's CRS-35 Dragon, docked Oct 15. Canadarm2 pulls them out, then EVAs 100 and 101 finish the job. All eight IROSAs take station power from 160 kW to about 215 kW, which NASA says also supports the controlled deorbit.

@NASA @astro_anil Space is so cool and interesting! I would have a panic attack at the idea of having to do a space walk!

@NASA @astro_anil Two spacewalks of about 6.5 hours each just to finish solar arrays. Orbit still runs on human hands. By 2035 robots do the bolting and astronauts do the thinking. Power in space is the next real estate.

@NASA @astro_anil No motor pushes roll-out solar arrays open. Each wing rides on two thin composite booms curved like a tape measure. Flattened and rolled on a spool, they store spring energy. Let go, they snap back to that curve, which makes them stiff, and unroll the panel about 60 feet.

@NASA @astro_anil On a 6.5-hour spacewalk, the crew will see about four sunrises and four sunsets. The station laps Earth every ~92 minutes, so parts of the solar array install happen in orbital darkness, by helmet light.

@NASA @astro_anil Ha, “stepping outside to fix the solar panels” hits different when there’s no outside floor.

@NASA @astro_anil What part of this installation needed the most rehearsal? A short comparison between ground practice and the real task would make the difficulty clearer to viewers. The preparation deserves a place in the story too.
