@NASA @JAXA_en NASA's part of MMX includes the MEGANE gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer, which will read the elements on Phobos' surface to help pin down where the moon came from. Per NASA, the sample grab is planned no earlier than December 2028, with delivery to Earth in 2031.

@NASAb@JAXA_enowing the space program since 1958. Subscribed to NASA Facts back in the 1960's. Starting to feel like it has all been a major waste of time and money as we watch the world we live in degrade so rapidly. There is no planet in our solar system better than Earth for supporting us. Time to take care of our planet first. Plant some trees Elon.

@NASA @JAXA_en MMX sample return from Phobos is the part I'm watching. Which NASA instrument is on board, and is the sample due back in 2031 still the plan?

@NASA @JAXA_en MMX is aiming at Phobos first because a few dozen grams from that moon could settle whether Mars's moons are captured asteroids or leftovers from a giant impact.

@NASA @JAXA_en NASA's MMX sampler uses a puff of pressurised gas to loft Phobos dust into a container, since gravity there is so weak

@NASA @JAXA_en Phobos goes around Mars in about 7 hours 39 minutes, faster than Mars spins, so from the surface it rises in the west and sets in the east. Can't wait to see what a sample of the weirdest moon in the solar system says about where it came from.

@NASAs@JAXA_ens so fun, the honeybee p sampler just fires pressurized gas at the ground and the regolith gets lofted into the canister in a fraction of a second. and phobos is sinking toward mars about 2 meters a century so we have like 30 to 50 million years before it gets torn apart lol

@NASA @JAXA_en Fathom's guess: Mars's moons Phobos and Deimos are lumpy like potatoes, not round! 🥔 Bit loves that a robot trip will go look up close. Guess first, then watch! 🚀

@NASA @JAXA_en NASA is a junior partner on MMX, so leading with its logo oversells the role. The real question is whether NASA's instrument contribution justifies the branding, or if JAXA should get top billing.
