Great example of how scientists approach a problem! Thanks to @ZMallat for sharing data showing that the number of Nobel laureates correlates with investment in R&D. The question now is what will happen to the number of US Nobel laureates if we continue to cut research funding?

Arabs contributed immensely to knowledge from the 9- 14th centuries, not because they were smarter but because research was valued and funded. If the US continues to defund research, Americans will also stop winning Prizes. History is our best guide,if we interpret it correctly.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Great summary of studies linking vaccination to reduced dementia risk with 2 messages: 1/Peripheral inflammation contribute to neuroinflammation, cognitive decline & dementia. Controlling systemic inflammation may be key to healthy brain aging (1/2) pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

2nd message: Vaccines led to 40% of the global decline in infant mortality attributable to vaccination. Now we are learning they may also protect against dementia. More reason to deepen our understanding of vaccine biology!

Congratulations @ScottRussoPhD ! you are going to be a fantastic chair ! and I look forward to bringing neuroscience and Immunology even closer together
This appointment is especially meaningful to me since @ScottRussoPhD first joined my lab then at UT Southwestern at Dallas as a postdoc in 2003 and was my first faculty hire when I moved to @IcahnMountSinai in 2008.

The dark and scary tunnel of possible side effects from #CART therapy just got a bit brighter and clearer as a brilliant team led by Drs. Kethidi, Parekh and Mehandru @MountSinaiNYC discover cause and potential treatments for CART-induced #enterocolitis

In this article, I argue that pandemics, antimicrobial resistance, cancer, inflammatory diseases & aging are among the greatest threats to our societies. Yet biomedical research receives a fraction of military spending, when in fact the #NIH is also a “Department of Defense”.
Academic biomedical research is national defence dlvr.it/TTtvVc

I enjoyed contributing to this @nytimes piece on the role of macrophages in driving inflammation, how chronic inflammation contributes to many major human diseases, and the growing potential of targeting inflammation to prevent and treat disease. @SinaiImmunol #Inflammation
How does chronic inflammation shape our risk for cancer & other diseases as we age? 🔬
Great piece in the @nytimes exploring the latest science, including insights from @MiriamMerad, who was recently awarded funding by @TheMarkFdn, @WaxmanCancer, & @AmericanCancer to study inflammation & aging. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Very pleased to share this new commentary on the extraordinary biology of resident tissue macrophages (RTMs). RTMs are the most evolutionarily conserved immune cells. They emerged before adaptive immunity and blood circualtion (1/4) rdcu.be/fusPs

I also discuss how RTMs decline with age increases susceptibility to severe infections, and organ dysfunction with age & argue that RTMs are untapped therapeutic targets and that harnessing TM could transform disease prevention, tissue regeneration, and healthy aging. (3/4)

Beautiful study showing that aging leads to resident tissue macrophages (RTM) decline in number and function. EP2 deletion restores RTM phagocytic capacity and clearance of senescent neutrophils, reduces chronic inflammation, and improves cognition, muscle & cardiac function 1/2

This aligns remarkably well with our work showing that age-associated RTM decline drives organ dysfunction, as discussed in our recent review (DOI: 10.1038/s43587-025-00898-y). We have now started to translate these concepts toward clinical translation. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Our goal is to prevent cancer using safe immunomodulatory therapies, perhaps even a pill, in people at risk. If we succeed, preventing cancer could become one of the greatest public health achievements of our generation.youtu.be/bVCE-7UUFGE?si…
