Symbolic regression is when you fit the form of an equation to empirical data, not just the coefficients. I really like @MilesCranmer's library he built for this, PYSR. I put together a little web demo so you can play with it and get a feel for it

Two years of work, and PySR v2 is finally out!

If you haven't used it before: PySR is a machine learning library that finds short equations that fit your data.

I've always wanted a PyTorch for symbolic learning. PySR v2 is a big step towards that:

Here is the full talk:
Had fun writing this talk for our MPhil students today:
"How to avoid AI Brain Rot"

Discussing how to avoid intelligence atrophy from AI use in work and study. And how to stand out on an ever-narrowing bell curve

Many people just starting out on Lean formalization have enjoyed playing the Natural Numbers Game. Now Autumn Mapes has produced Visual Lean, isomorphic to the original but playable in a lovely intuitive way with clicking and dragging rather than typing.

Just watched a frontier LLM debug a website by literally turning my wifi off and on - but ofc it couldn’t actually turn the wifi back on because its connection was severed

Working with coding agents every day, some of the choices they make are *still* so unbelievably dumb, it makes me wonder if we will ever get to AGI, despite the rapid advancements in certain specialized axes

With my physicist hat on, I feel like this is a good time to remind people that Navier-Stokes is physically meaningless at the scales where there might be a mathematical singularity

Basically, math papers should now no longer be about

‣ I've solved this problem / proved this conjecture

but rather about

‣ I found and understood something instructive / enlightening / surprising / beautiful / useful, and I want to share it with you and explain it.

Everyone goes through AI psychosis once where you heavily using AI. Then (hopefully) you become enlightened and don't use it for writing/creative work. But it's hard to tell when someone sends work without slop if they're pre-psychosis or post-enlightenment.

AI slop in software has gotten so bad that I've had to start maintaining private forks of most of my dev stack. Every release, I go and cherry-pick the bug fixes and delete the new features. Madness.

> Put every resource on a virtual filesystem so your agent doesn't have to learn some janky 10-field API to browse a PR.

This just makes so much sense. How is every other coding harness not doing this
oh-my-pi is so good. Some of the features it has just seem so obvious in retrospect.

Gave PySR v2 a spin to try and recover a CAD model from a point cloud.
This only uses sketch/extrude + set operations, registered as a custom CADValue type and operations on it. Not perfect but pretty cool to watch!
Crazy stuff. Here is PySR v2 discovering a shader from data:

We're about to have symbolic learning for everything

Releasing PySR v2 today or tomorrow, if anybody wants to try to break the beta version:

pip install -U pysr==2.0.0b2

Bug reports hugely appreciated. Docs: ai.damtp.cam.ac.uk/pysr/dev/

More fun examples - Here, we get PySR to figure out the rules for Conway's Game of Life:
