Meditations in Color retweeted
For about three thousand years, desire has been art's most constant subject, and civilization has spent most of that time finding respectable ways to name it. We are a working archive of that history, across every culture and century, one work and one story at a time.

Rothko's room at the Phillips Collection was the first space in an American museum set aside for his work. He asked for dimmer light and a plain wooden bench, and the bench is still there.

The colors of a butterfly wing are not pigment. Microscopic structures in its scales interfere with light and reflect the color.

Nobody knows who she was, or whether Vermeer used a real model. Girl with a Pearl Earring is a tronie, a study of a character rather than a portrait of an identified person.

The dark background was once a green curtain but its translucent paint has changed over the centuries. ound tiny eyelashes that are now difficult to see.

Her pearl has no visible hook or outline. Vermeer suggests its shape with touches of white paint, including a reflection of her collar.

And the blue in her headscarf began as lapis lazuli from what is now Afghanistan, ground into ultramarine, a pigment often described as more precious than gold in the 17th ce.
