We must always stand for freedom, justice and peace. Today the @CWUnews remembers all who fought and died to defend these principles and those who have suffered and continue to suffer from conflict and war.

When the minimum wage was introduced, the Tories said it would take the economy off the edge of a cliff.
Guess what: it didn't happen.
We can have decent employment, support for small employers and pay people a decent wage at the same time.

The crisis at Royal Mail will become a “major political issue” because our new campaign will “force a positive solution” onto the agenda, our general secretary Dave Ward has told members.
We believe the real answer is a “new model of ownership” where “the government will take a ny, and workers have some real ownership of the company.”
We have launched SOS Royal Mail, a campaign that will “force a positive solution to these problems onto the agenda.” As Dave told reps, “this campaign will not be sorted in headquarters, but through our local power. Our members will be a collective voice that says to politicians – thank you for holding Royal Mail accountable, now do what you’re meant to do, which is change things for the workforce, the company and the country.”
Our deputy general secretary Martin Walsh also addressed reps, emphasising the importance of the campaign to “reach every part of our membership”, and warned that “unless we get out there, the next 18 months will mean even more significant challenges.”

This was a school, distributing humanitarian aid.
Russia is deliberately targeting civilians in an attempt to break the people of Ukraine. But they will not be broken & we will continue to stand with them & call out Putin’s war crimes. 🇺🇦

At least 29 people have died after Russian strikes on a school distributing humanitarian aid in #Komyshuvakha. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

Today, the CWU met with the employer and government to address the growing national crisis at Royal Mail.
There is a growing understanding that things can’t go on this way. Service is failing, employees are beyond exhausted, and the recruitment and retention situation is oyal Mail as a national institution which functions properly for workers and customers, difficult decisions have to be made.
From our perspective, we are setting forward the huge opportunities we know can come with a properly managed Royal Mail. It is a company and workforce unrivalled in its infrastructure, experience and trust among the communities they serve.
This should make Royal Mail an asset, not a declining institution – things do not have to be the way they are.
As a union, we put that argument across today and will be continuing to promoting these arguments in workplaces, social media and public events in the coming months.

On the night federal agents killed Alex Pretti, neighbors across Minnesota went out to their street corners. They lit candles, stood together, and they reminded each other that we keep each other safe.
This Election Night, they’re going back out, & asking us to join them.

Working people are more motivated than anyone to get out and vote - for an economy that works for all of us, for candidates who will stand with us, not billionaires.
This midterm election runs through our union halls. We’re the tip of the spear for the change that’s coming.

Kyiv, a city of 4 million people, is without running water today. Electricity is available for just 2.5 hours between 7 AM and 10 PM, with somewhat longer access at night.
This is what daily life looks like in Ukraine’s capital under russian attacks.

It’s hard to hold back tears watching the video of people from occupied Oleshky returning to Ukraine.
People came out with flags and stood for hours in the rain along the road, just to wave at the passing buses.
At the meeting point, water and food were set up for pets.
A her heart as the bus comes to a stop.
Two sisters cry and hug their dad. A wife slips his wedding ring onto his finger, the ring she had carried with her all this time.
“We wanted Ukraine to return to Oleshky, not for Oleshky to leave,” say those who have returned.

The Prime Minster was unequivocal in his commitment to look to outlaw bogus employment in order to truely level the playing field to secure the long term future of Royal Mail.
"I can absolutely give my honourable friend that assurance."

Over a third of self-employed parcel drivers say they earn less than the minimum wage. 📦
A new University of Sheffield report compared two major UK parcel companies: one that directly employs its drivers under collective bargaining, and one that relies on self-employed e was stark.
CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said: “Those who are self-employed face huge disadvantages compared to properly employed workers in terms of pay, working hours and employment conditions.”
The government is now consulting on tackling bogus self-employment.
The CWU will be pushing for robust measures and enforcement to end the race to the bottom in parcel delivery, and equal rights for every worker in the sector.

The government has agreed to meet the CWU and Royal Mail's owners on 3rd November. When this happens, we'll be calling for the government to support a new direction for the company, which will require:
• An ambitious growth strategy that utilises Royal Mail's infrastructure kers at the heart of the community and the economy;
• A new ownership model which gives greater accountability to the public;
• Workers and the government taking a greater stake in Royal Mail;
• Ending the 'race to the bottom' culture in the wider postal and logistics sector.
We asked the government to crack down on bogus self-employment, and they listened. This is a good start, and we will continue fighting to improve the lives of our members and the quality of their industry.
