Only 25,900 of its 76,800 employees work in the US.
In 2024 it opened the largest office it has ever built from the ground up. Gurugram, India. Nearly one million square feet. 18,000+ Between November and June it also got 554 H-1B positions certified. 189 of those filings sat at the top wage level. 187 for NEW hires.
Today it books a $336 million restructuring charge and cuts about 5% of its workforce. At an estimated $96,000 a head in restructuring costs the points to American layoffs.
Watching closely.

I was Director of Engineering at AMEX a year ago. They are doing this so that they can rehire in India. The inside story is MUCH WORSE than that though.
Amex has been doing silent layoffs for years. As director, the VP told me to gradually increase expectations on engineers so “for cause” When you do this as a leader you get a backfill head to hire for. The caveat at AMEX? The backfill head was already decided for you - they were in India, and usually from a body shop firm.
