Modern Times Café (temporarily rebranded Post Modern Times) dropped all prices after the shooting of Alex Pretti and operated as a free, donation-only place, open to everyone except ICE agents, as a protest against . The model attracted large numbers of non-paying customers, including people dealing with homelessness and addiction. Neighbors reported open drug use, discarded needles, theft, and overcrowding that drove away regular paying customers concerned about safety and the atmosphere.
Staff are now losing their jobs, and the neighborhood is losing a longtime local restaurant. The experiment shows what tends to happen when a business is run according to an ideology that treats prices, profits, and paying customers as the problem rather than the mechanism that keeps the lights on.
