"There is enormous inertia—a tyranny of the status quo—in private and especially government arrangements. Only a crisis—actual or perceived—produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. ..."

Sure, House Dems should TOTALLY give Rep. Haley Stevens nothing left to lose. Genius plan!
🚨Some House Dems now want to kick Haley Stevens out of their caucus or to be punished in her final few months in Congress
“I was the first Caucus member to host a fundraiser for her Senate bid. And, I’d be the first to make the motion to remove her,” retiring Rep. Marc Veasey (D-Texas) told us.
“This is insane,” he added.
Five other House Dems privately told @politico they want Stevens removed from the caucus or for her to be punished by leadership. Stevens was also removed from a series of House Democratic member text chats Sunday, according to 3 ppl.
But forcing Stevens out of the caucus could hurt the party in the lame duck session, given Republicans only hold a razor-thin majority and want to pass several party-line items before the end of the year. Some senior Democrats are hoping they win big enough on Tuesday for the Stevens blowup to die down in the celebrations.
Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, a senior House Democrat, tried to tamp down the calls for Stevens to be punished now. “I think we shouldn’t be discussing [this] and focus on Tuesday for this time,” Dingell told POLITICO.

Free and fair elections are essential to our democracy, and so is public trust in them.
The reports coming out of Alaska should be a wake-up call. One party’s bad actions never justify another’s.
We must demand better from our politics.

Wasteful nonsense from a wasteful project.
Stuff like this is why people don't trust government.
How to get more trust: be trustworthy. It's that simple.

Breaking News: The chief executive of California’s High-Speed Rail Authority has abruptly resigned after a recent state report that found that the agency had misused nearly $600,000 to pay for the travel of consultants. This is a developing story. nyti.ms/4zoacHi

Modernizing Congress is a powerful way for the mainstream to deliver the goods. Fix incentives, and capacity/information will follow.
Fortunately, a growing "fix Congress" community has ideas.

The rise of the DSA is no mystery.
People see the mainstream failing them, so they're more open to what used to be fringe movements.

Recover Stronger focuses on institutional upgrades to strengthen deliberation and responsible choices.
It does not propose a menu of deficit-reducers because 1) those who will negotiate them know them, and 2) the outcomes will reflect who has which levers of power then.

Check it out and weigh in.
Most important, if you can, contribute to getting solutions ready for when policymakers will be desperate for them.

If a debt crisis happens, there will be no time to build solutions from scratch.
Policymakers will reach for whatever proposals are already credible, understood, and ready to move.
That's why I’ve just published Recover Stronger: A Debt Crisis Playbook for Policymakers.

Recover Stronger lays out what Congress and the White House should do – and in what order – if market stress becomes a broader crisis of fiscal confidence:
- Set credible fiscal targets
- Fix the budget process
- Replace breakdown points: shutdown & debt-limit brinkmanship.

@MichaelLotfi Economic growth + budget restraint = control debt burden.
Population growth (technically, worker growth) has been a huge part of economic growth.

@KurtCouchman Someone needs to tell policy makers you can't "outgrow the debt" when population starts shrinking.

It's nuts to vest enormous discretion and power in some guy who becomes president by a couple percentage points.
Much better for a deliberative and diverse legislature to set the policy agenda and for the president to carry it out.
This is about Brazil, but not only.

Recently dug into table top role playing exercises a bit.
Not for D&D or Magic The Gathering or anything, but as a way to think through public policy ideas.
Pretty cool. At least for a certain kind of nerd. ;)

The "buying" lacks a basis in statute, if anyone cares.
Memo to the Trump administration: Stop buying companies.
A government $40 trillion in debt should be SELLING assets, not buying ownership stakes in 36 companies.
We thought government control of the means of production was what we were fighting against.

The only losers in the BAAJA debate are the environmental trial lawyers who lose their lucrative cash cow of killing ALL energy projects "for the common good."
Important context here via @BenKrauss5: the campaign to tar BAAJA as a handout to data centers is completely astroturfed, spawned by fringe groups who fear that Democrats might end their business model - litigating against energy projects - to build more clean energy.

From @WSJopinion: “Medicare for All” isn’t Medicare as we know it. The program would eliminate competition and choice, limit access and raise taxes, writes Joel Zinberg.
