Critical thinking doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Knowledge provides the framework students need to evaluate information, recognize misinformation, and distinguish fact from fiction. Without it, almost anything can seem believable.

Knowledge matters.

Vocabulary instruction can easily be embedded in phonics routines!
A kindergarten teacher shows how she teaches phonics and vocabulary at the same time. While working with short words like "cog" or "gum," she pauses briefly to explain what the word means or has kids use it in a sentence—without slowing down the reading practice. The tip for couple of tricky words in each lesson and quickly explain them while kids practice sounding out words. scienceofreadingclassroom.substack.com/p/embedding-vo…

My daughter came home from school today and immediately asked if it is rude to correct a new teacher if the information she is teaching the class is wrong.

I told her it’s important that the students have the CORRECT information and that all teachers should have enough content r subject and the curriculum expectations.

This new teacher was unsure of the differences between symbiotic and asymbiotic relationships (a little knowledge of morphology would have helped prevent that confusion!)

Since the class has a test next week, my daughter felt it was important for the class have the correct information. So she clarified the definitions for the teacher who had the definitions reversed.

My point is, our education system has NOT prioritized content knowledge for so many years- instead focusing on skills alone- that we now have teachers going into the teaching profession without the knowledge they need to teach the content!! This is exactly when teachers start to rely on an “inquiry-based approach” because it’s easier to ask students to figure it out themselves than to teach what they don’t know.

Direct instruction is key to learning- but for direct instruction to be effective, we also need knowledgeable teachers!! @KnowledgeMatrs @natwexler @nsachdeva2019 @New_Old_Paul

I enjoyed this opportunity to chat with @dperkinsed yesterday. We specifically got into the weeds of where instruction for novices should start and why.
Great to talk with @PCSnow1604 about some of the things we disagree on, and find areas of agreement!

“Memory is the residue of thought” and “Understand is remembering in disguise,” as the great Daniel Willingham has said.

If we want students to remember what we need them to remember, we must intentionally and explicitly prompt them to think meaningfully about those facts and ot enough. Reading a fact, telling students a fact, or even having them chorally respond or turn and talk about a fact will not necessarily produce a strong memory. This is especially true for students who lack relevant prior knowledge.

But prompt all students to categorize facts, rank and defend them, and strategically use them in their writing about cause, complication, and consequence, and you give them much better opportunities to remember.

Vocab moment of the day. At pick-up, my 4 year old granddaughter runs up to give me a hug and isn't wearing shoes. One of my students sees a perfect opportunity to use one of our vocab words (bare) and excitedly announces, "She has bare feet!"

It’s been a while, but I finally got the inevitable question from a student today: “When am I ever going to need to know this?”

I figured it was a good opportunity to repost a piece I wrote last year about how I respond in these situations and, more importantly, what I believe s need to hear, even if it isn’t necessarily the one they want to hear—or the one we want to give. Link below.

I could not endorse that more strongly!! High quality lexical representations are the key to reading.
