Federal agents swarmed Mario’s small business and took everything, including hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and checks. Before they left, the agents promised the business would hear from them within 30 days.
That was more than 600 days ago. Mario is still waiting. 1/

More than 20 years ago, Melony Armstrong stood up for the freedom to earn an honest living—and won.
With IJ's help, Melony challenged Mississippi's burdensome licensing laws and her fight led to a landmark reform that has opened doors for more than 6,700 braiders across Mississippi and inspired the feature film #FreedomHair.
Today, Melony needs our help.
The building that houses her salon, braiding academy, and youth training programs is in jeopardy. Learn more about Melony's fight to preserve Naturally Speaking here: gofundme.com/f/help-melony-…

Miami-Dade suspended its ALPR program. It isn’t alone — Pasco, Manatee, St. Lucie, Tallahassee, Palm Beach, and dozens more have paused or pulled theirs too. Nationally, IJ has counted 247 full cancellations so far.
Good — constant, warrant-less surveillance is unconstitutional.

Excellent coverage of our lawsuit challenging this now nearly 20 month seizure—a pithy explanation for those that'd prefer not to read the full 3-page motion and 16-page memo...
IRS and DHS agents took $460,000 from an Arizona convenience store owner 20 months ago and still have not explained why. reason.com/2026/10/21/the…

Cash is not criminal. But the feds keep treating it like it is.
Cash is just at the core of how many small businesses operate. Cash isn't inherently suspicious.

IRS agents seized over $450,000 from a small business in Arizona in February 2025.
The alleged crime? "Structuring" ... meaning engaging in cash transactions under $10,000.
Nearly 20 months later, the government has not filed a case, but still has the funds.

The IRS showed up and took cash, computers, and phones from a Phoenix area small business. 18 months later: no criminal charges, no forfeiture notice, and no word on when the property might be returned. The government can't take your stuff indefinitely: azfamily.com/2026/10/21/gle…

This case is part of a pattern in which law enforcement seems to presume that cash is inherently criminal — it’s not. Cash is just at the core of how many small businesses operate. 4/

@IJ continues to fight back against this pattern of abuse — and keeps winning.

I called Esperanza this morning to give her the good news.
She was proud the PI saved many other small businesses across California, not just hers.
And I was proud to be her lawyer. 1/

In other words, try again after even more innocent innocent people’s homes get destroyed for free.
Today, SCOTUS denied cert. in @IJ's SWAT-takings cases.
Justices Sotomayor and Gorsuch wrote respecting denial in the related case of O'Donnell v. Chicago.
As in IJ's previous petition in Baker v. McKinney, the Justices said the issue would benefit from even more percolation.

This is unsurprising to anyone that has been following developments in this industry. Aggressive immigration enforcement has meant citizens and others with status have been inappropriately detained, like @IJ client Leo, who was detained twice at work (and once at home). 1/3

Leo is a U.S. citizen born in Florida. And he is justifiably concerned.

And Leo is not alone. Other declarants in our case describe similarly frightening experiences — like having to choose between earning an honest living and being free from unlawful raids. No one should have to make that choice. 3/3

The idea that judicial notice would be appropriate for a press release is absurd. A press release is, by definition, subject to reasonable dispute — especially one from an agency with DHS’s documented record of lying about these exact operations.
In one of @IJ's cases, the federal government is moving to dismiss under Rule 12(b)(6), and it argues that it can rely on the contents of its own press releases to step outside the four walls of our complaint.
I've never seen that before.
