Day 3 of @TheMarsSociety recap and conclusion of a really interesting conference!

Today two discussions caught my attention, the first property rights off world on the Moon, Mars or beyond and how this will be a critical forcing function to encourage exploration and settlement.
ptive approach to space suit design and iteration with the “MarsSuit” which can have applications on the moon, Mars or more, tailored to each environment and with an eye for cost control while also offering a better form of PPE that can be used earth!

I give some final thoughts about the conference and, in my opinion, the need for us to stop planning, get going to the Moon and Mars and iterate as we go.

Also, I believe it is time to move beyond celebrating the past and embrace new challenges, do new missions and have new “heroes” for the next generation.

I want to thank the organizers and volunteers of @TheMarsSociety for a great conference and for fighting to keep the Mars dream alive!

Great to see the @Tesla Roadster in person!

This is on display in Main Lobby of the @Petersen_Museum for the next 4 days! (Saturday, October 24th - Tuesday, October 27th).

Here’s a quick video of what it looks like … it’s bigger than I had thought!

This was an interesting Spacesuit live demonstration at @TheMarsSociety conference. Check out this short video clip!

Designing spacesuits for Mars and using a more agile approach to design and development of these suits results in a lighter, dramatically reduced costs and first mass produce these at a scale that can allow hundreds or thousands people operate on the Martian surface.

The same principles make the even lighter and less complex Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for use on earth.

These two suits, one as PPE and the other as a “MarsSuit Project” was presented by Dr. Lawrence Kuznetz and his graduate student Audrey Liddle from the University of California, Berkeley as an academic and collaborative initiative to design a practical, "blue-collar" spacesuit for daily 7-to-8-hour surface shifts on Mars.

Key Design Innovations
•Hybrid Two-Suits-in-One Concept: Separates pressurized oxygen inside the helmet from the rest of the body, which is pressurized externally using the Martian carbon dioxide (CO₂) atmosphere via a neck dam.
•Hardware Reduction: Eliminates traditional, bulky mechanical cooling and pumping backpack hardware by utilizing the Martian environment, reducing weight, bulk, and mechanical failure points.
•Advanced Materials: Incorporates features like lightweight radiation-protection systems, peelable layers, and integrated personal mission control software.
•Collaborative Network: Developed alongside contributions from students and researchers across institutions such as the University of Helsinki, Texas A&M, MIT, the University of Ljubljana, and NASA-affiliated centers, evolving into modern platforms.

As suspected, these are the upgraded raptors as the visible serial numbers are all in the 200s.

I wonder if the upgrades are purely shielding and insulation or related to the engine’s function and reliability too.

Somehow, this slide presented at @TheMarsSociety about how spacesuit designs are and have been traditionally managed in a recursive, waterfall and highly structured process is what needs to be disrupted and soon.

In my opinion, this approach and mindset is at the root of long lization of hardware, huge budgets, delays and cost overruns and indeed, does not inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists, which we really need.

We can and must do better if we are to scale beyond handfuls of space explorers and with truly astronomical and unsustainable budgets.

The solution? Iterate as we actually go to the moon, Mars and beyond, start simplified and adapt to actual conditions, not endless risk mitigation efforts wasting more time delaying us actually leaving earth.

My 2 cents.

28.1 miles. A new off-world record on Mars.

After more than 2,000 Martian days exploring Jezero Crater, @NASA’s Perseverance rover continues to show what’s possible when science, technology, and exploration come together.

Congratulations @NASA and @NASAJPL. Here’s to pushing d beyond.

Final segment of the Vehicle Access Tower is up at LC-36! 🚀🗼

Timelapse of this morning’s lift and placement of the combined top module + 100-ft lightning arrestor mast. It only took 114 days since the first module destack July 2. 🤯

Still to go: umbilicals, access platforms.

Day 3 of @TheMarsSociety 28th Annual conference and we start off with a very interesting discussion about the need, no the requirement for property ownership, in compliance with both the Outer Space Treaty and the Artemis Accords to make space exploration possible.

This was Zitelmann you can read more in his book “New Space Capitalism”.

Lots to think about and consider as we are on the verge of returning to the moon and then on to Mars.
