Album 10: Real Life by Magazine
If you took scrappy Glam Rock and mixed it with angsty punk vocals, you'd get something akin to this. Even from the very first song, it's easy to get a feel for the combination of sensibilities at play.
Overall, I felt like it was a mixed bag, anaged to really stick in my head. "Shot by Both Sides," for example, is a definite banger and "Burst" does a great job showcasing the Bowie influence.
In general it's a nice early Post Punk project with some really good hooks scattered around.

Album 9: Honeymoon in Red by Lydia Lunch
I had high hopes for this one since it's a collaboration with The Birthday Party, but... it's not good.
Honeymoon in Red brings the abrasive noisiness of The Birthday Party, yet little of the psychotic energy or charisma. Lunch performs semi-spoken word manner that sounds downright drowsy at times.
You may remember that Christian Death's "Only Theatre of Pain," which I reviewed earlier in this series, also had a semi-spoken word style, but unlike the performances here was charged with a theatrical, almost cartoonish energy that worked to elevate it.
It's almost a relief when Nick Cave, the vocalist of The Birthday Party, comes in halfway through the album, but he also sounds like he doesn't want to be there. The only vocalist who does sound inspired is Rowland S Howard, but his voice is just not very good to begin with.
There are some interesting instrumental segments, but not much that you couldn't hear on the Birthday Party's releases. Ironically, Birthday Party members Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, responsible for some of the better elements here, both had a falling out with Lunch after the recording sessions and she refused to credit them on the final release. Yeesh!
Anyway, I can't recommend this one.

Album 8: Under a Godless Veil by Draconian
Gloomy, yet melodic Doom Metal; Under a Godless Veil evokes imagery of winter-torn fields and mist-cloaked forests at dusk.
I found the tone of this album appealing, but it has a very consistent morose plodding pace that makes all of d together after a while.
It's a good listen though. Not a bad choice if you're looking for something that sounds both heavy and forlorn.

Album 7: It: The Album by Alien Sex Fiend
I had such a pain in the ass time trying to listen to this album because things kept popping up at work that I had to handle, so I'd have to put it on pause for a while and come back.
Maybe my grumpiness colored my enjoyment of the t was just okay. It's a loud, rough-around-the-edges punk album with electronic elements and has some interesting sounds.
Some of the songs just go on too long though (for instance, "Manic Depression" was not enough of a bop to warrant that 13 minute runtime). The rambling vocals also occasionally come off very "this is outrageous, this is contagious," if you catch my drift.
It was a decent listen with a good sense of humor, but I just didn't have very strong feelings about it in the end.
