Andy Burnham promised to bury Thatcherism. For now, he is taking on the bloke blasting music on the bus.

But inside No10, it is all part of a deliberate ‘big things, small things’ strategy.”

In July, Burnham reflected on his failed 2010 social care reforms. His lesson? “Engage now, away from an election… Build it with people.”

The thinking is that voters have stopped believing government can change their lives. So it’s small, visible wins to rebuild trust now while giving bigger, divisive reforms time to breathe.

But Labour’s patience is already being tested.

From a Labour backbencher walking out of a meeting with a Treasury minister over support for areas without mayors, to Miatta Fahnbulleh’s reluctance to defend Shabana Mahmood’s migrant reforms long before this week’s awkward TV interview.

“He comes in, promises biggest change in 40 years. People were tired of waiting under Starmer. They will be tired of waiting under Burnham too,” one Labour MP tells me.

Outstanding PA drop:

Alcohol should not be the priority when preparing an emergency box of supplies, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advised the public.

Under a new Government “be ready” campaign, households are being urged to be prepared in case everyday services are temporarily disrupted, with three days of key supplies set aside.

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner previously joked that a bottle of sauvignon blanc and mascara would be part of her kit.

Asked if wine would also be part of his emergency box, Mr Burnham said: “I’m not sure that that’s the top of the list in terms of the advice that we’re giving to the to the public.

“You need to have a clear head when it comes to a challenging situation.

“So yeah, some tins of food, some bottled water. But I’m sure people are allowed a glass or two as well to get them through a difficult situation,” he added.

The Govt says people should have three litres of bottled drinking water per person, per day - which is 36 litres for a family of four!
NEW: Families are being urged by the government to stockpile three days worth of food and water to survive a national emergency.

Ministers have also told the public to keep a battery-powered torch, sleeping bags, cash and a wind-up radio in the house.

Fair few MPs of different parties have been in touch to say they thought Hoyle's rant was a bit OTT, especially for a Speaker who talks of cooling the Commons temperature
Downing Street is today gently pushing back at the Speaker's screaming outburst in the Commons yesterday.

No10 says that it is standard practice to announce market-sensitive information in the morning, and point out it was accompanied by a written statement to the Commons.

Very strong from the PM’s official spokesperson on US envoy Steve Witkoff calling Putin a humanitarian…

We do not recognise that characterisation… Putin has killed thousands of people… innocent Ukrainians and Russian soldiers… and he’s starving children of heat and warmth.

Absolutely correct - glad the pretence that these decisions have nothing to do with politics is finally being dropped.
With Andy Burnham referring to ‘quasi-judicial’ processes to grant new oil and gas licences, Hugo Rifkind (unsuccessfully) attempts to discover the meaning behind Westminster’s latest word salad.

“Explain it to me!”

“I can’t”

Seismic news coming out of Flutter this morning.

Fundamentals of that business are exceptionally sound and it’s being taxed out of the market.

A genuine disgrace and thoughts with a lot of good people who will be affected.
