Chris Bishop: National's voter law will help us win 1-2 more electorate seats. It oppress 300,000 #Kiwi voters, 1/3 of them young. "Democracy is so special," gaslights Luxon, as he replicates US style Republican tactics in a bill he passed under urgency in Dec 2025 #NewZealand
Luxon blames 300,000+ Kiwis for not enrolling and blames the Electoral Commission, but takes no responsibility for changing the law in the first place. There's literally no gain.

The only outcome is disenfranchising 300,000+ Kiwis! They went out of their way to do this!

i don't think people like this understand how patronising it would be for an elderly person to be told "oh yeah we changed the rules, did you not check online?"
@dreadconquest Anyone who is eligible to vote must enrol once they turn 18. If previously enrolled, they could have checked online to ensure their details were up to date. Aside from giving them the option to vote, the electoral roll is also used for other civic responsibilities.

Sad how many angry people are commenting on this post who don't seem to appreciate democracy or have any compassion for accessibility struggles that others might have. Do you really think it's morally right gor a government to make voting harder?

Are they trying to make Govt policy more centrist and banal, given they're not including anything interesting in their bottom lines?
